Discworld: Adventures in Ankh-Morpork

via YouTube

This one is shaping up to actually deliver on the silliness and ridiculousness of Terry Pratchett's novels while also being a fun game. Early rules previews showed that puns are part of the mechanics. The publisher is Modiphius, also known for TTRPGs based on Dune, Fallout, and Star Trek

Based On: The Discworld books, particularly the city of Ankh-Morpork.

Best For: Discworld fans, those looking for more whimsy in their fantasy RPGs.

Release Date: Kickstarter backers should have it, retail release Q2 2026.

Twilight Sword

via Free League

Twilight Sword made an impressive showing on BackerKit with its very Breath of the Wild art style, pretty dice rewards, and the promise of playing as a penguin. The game aims to channel  the exploration focus and aesthetic of classic video game RPGs. It’s made by Two Little Mice, creators of Outgunned.

Based On: Japanese video games like Zelda, Final Fantasy, and Dragon Quest.

Best For: Those looking for a rules light, art-heavy fantasy RPG with cooking mechanics.

Release Date: July 2026 for backers, no retail release given yet.

Apocalypse World: Burned Over

via Lumley Games

Here’s the game that started a pillar of the TTRPG hobby, Powered by the Apocalypse. The PbtA base rules are often the foundation for narrative games, especially for popular brand names like the Avatar RPG. Now, this Apocalypse World 3e aims to collect all the criticisms and developments that the system has seen over the years into a more complete package.

Based On: Apocalypse World, the first Powered by the Apocalypse game.

Best For: Those looking for an easy-to-learn game that emphasizes player action over math.

Release Date: December 2026.

Temeraire: The Roleplaying Game

via Magpie

It’s a game where you ride dragons into battle, but during the Napoleonic Wars. Outside of dragon dogfights, your human character must navigate high society in Regency-era Britain. It’s made by Magpie Games, so expect more emphasis on roleplay with a narrative approach to combat.

Based On: The Temeraire alternate history fantasy novel series by Naomi Novik.

Best For: Dragon enthusiasts, Bridgerton fans, those looking for fantasy outside of a medieval aesthetic.

Release Date: Still in Kickstarter funding, aiming for 2027 full release. Free Quickstart available.

Invincible Superhero Roleplaying

via Free League

Superhero TTRPGs are well represented with the likes of Masks and Marvel Multiverse, but Invincible promises a bloodier take on the genre. Literally, with a critical hit table that delivers deadly consequences. Outside of combat, player characters will need to maintain personal relationships to balance out the stress and trauma of hero work. Free League is publishing this one using the Year Zero Engine seen in Forbidden Lands and Alien

Based On: The Invincible comic series and Amazon show.

Best For: Superhero fans looking for a more serious setting, fast-paced combat, and secret identity roleplay.

Release Date: Beta version is now available to Kickstarter backers, retail release July 2026.

Mutants & Masterminds 4th Edition

via Kickstarter

While Invincible brings a specific flavor of superhero stories to your table, Mutants & Masterminds serves as one of the more classic examples of the genre in TTRPGs. It’s so classic, in fact, that the third edition was published in 2011! So it seems like Green Ronin Publishing has realized, like many of its contemporaries, that a modern update is in order. And like several of these updates/revisions, it seems that the core game system will remain the same but with more streamlined tweaks to hero powers and classes.

Based On: Mutants & Masterminds 3e.

Best For: Mutants & Masterminds fans wanting updates to 3e.

Release Date: September 2026 for Kickstarter backers, November 2026 for retail.

GURPS 4th Edition Revised

via Steve Jackson Games

GURPS (Generic Universal RolePlaying System) is one of the most popular do-everything TTRPGs. After four editions and 40 years, publisher Steve Jackson Games decided it’s time for a revision. They promise fans that this isn’t some massive overhaul of the rules, but mostly an editorial refresh for clarity and errata’s sake. As such, it is still GURPS 4e as players know it.

Based On: Literally GURPS 4e.

Best For: GMs who want to bounce around genres and settings without having to make players learn a new system every time.

Release Date: March 2026 for the Basic Set Revised.

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 5th Edition

via Cubicle 7

With so many new players joining the TTRPG hobby, it makes sense to offer a less complicated version of your rules. And Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay is one of the champs when it comes to being complex. That said, Cubicle 7 knows that Warhammer fans want a good amount of tactical crunch in their game. As such, expect this new edition to be a streamlined version of the current WFP with more varitey in player options but without sacrificing depth.

Based On: Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay’s previous iterations.

Best For: Warhammer Fantasy fans. Those looking for a darker fantasy setting and tactical gameplay.

Release Date: June 2026.

Cosmere RPG Mistborn

via Brotherwise Games

The Kickstarter campaign for Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere RPG is one of the highest-earning TTRPG crowdfunders of all time. The resulting launch of the Stormlight Archives books pleased Sanderson fans and is up there in player count with the likes of Star Wars FFG and Lancer. Now it’s time for the Mistborn RPG. Expect new player options, a setting guide, and a new campaign book that spans both Eras of the novel storyline.

Based On: Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn novels.

Best For: Mistborn fans. Cosmere RPG players looking to explore the Sanderson multiverse.

Release Date: Fall 2026.

Old-School Essentials 2026 Rules Update

via Necrotic Gnome

Shadowdark, Dungeon Crawl Classics, and Old-School Essentials stand at the forefront of the Old-School Rennaissance (OSR). Shadowdark is still relatively new and enjoying its growth, while DCC seems content to stay as it is. And while OSE fans like it as it is, the publishers at Necrotic Gnome want to consolidate their many releases. So arrives OSE 2026 Update. The update keeps the base game the same, but publishes the core books in one updated package along with some xlass tweaks and new optional rules.

Based On: Previous OSE books.

Best For: Advanced D&D fans, newbies to OSE.

Release Date: TBA 2026.

Sergio Solórzano is the best Dungeon Master in the USA (according to a Wizards of the Coast competition, anyway). He loves minis and terrain but also goes all-in on improv!
