Interesting things happened in the tabletop gaming industry this week, and StartPlaying is here to round them up for you. In this week’s TTRPG news, Dropout makes Dimension 20 tickets more consumer friendly, Kobold Press takes shots at Wizards of the Coast to advertise their own book, and Star Trek Adventures beams up a new starter set.

Dimension 20 Announces Budget Ticket Lottery For Madison Square Garden

Dropout is giving Dimension 20 fans another chance at reasonably-priced tickets for its upcoming Gauntlet at the Garden live show. The massive event marks the first time a TTRPG actual play will be at Madison Square Garden, and ticket costs reached Taylor Swift levels earlier this year. After fan backlash about the ridiculous price points (a product of Ticketmaster surge pricing), Dropout is now offering the “Dimensioneer tickets lottery.”

The lucky few who get Dimensioneer tickets will only pay $35. You must request the tickets at this link by November 17. Dropout is also working to get rid of the surge pricing system for its 2025 West Coast tour.

Kobold Press Goes After 2024 DMG To Promote Its Own Book

A new article on the Kobold Press website “reviews” the 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide from Wizards of the Coast. This piece has drawn negative attention from commenters and members of the EN World forum for framing the review as a “hit piece” rather than a professional review. The article in question is titled “Comparing the ToV Game Master’s Guide to the Dungeon Master’s Guide” which is immediately transparent about its intent.

Kobold Press has its own Game Master’s Guide for Tales of the Valiant, its in-house take on 5E. In comparing the two guides, KP rules in favor of its own product to the point of seeming like an advertisement. For instance, there’s a bullet point list of just how many more traps, curses, and hazards the ToV book has over the DnD one. While criticism of WotC products is welcome and expected, it seems like KP was a little too eager to boost their own book for the readers’ liking.

Star Trek Adventures Gets 2nd Edition Starter Set

Modiphius is putting out a Starter Set for the second edition of Star Trek Adventures complete with a three-part campaign. The set looks to include all of the usuals of a TTRPG starter set: a shortened rules booklet, premade characters with a ship, rules reference sheets, a dice set, and cardboard tokens to mark the various mechanics.

The main draw will be the new three-mission adventure called Infinite Combinations. There’s no details yet on what the adventure is about, but no doubt it's meant to teach the game as you go. Physical editions are up for pre-order and cost around $30 with a ship date of December 2024. A PDF version will be provided right away after you order.

And that brings this week’s news roundup to a close! As always, thanks for reading, and may your dice be kind.
