This week is approaching its end, so it’s time to sit down with the latest in tabletop gaming news! We won’t take up too much of your time, though. StartPlaying TTRPG news is here to bring you the briefest bits of big stories so you can get back to making your new character.Â
For this week: The Discword TTRPG brings in the money, Chris Perkins steps back from DnD product lead position, DMG 2024 drops the 6-8 encounter day, and Dimension 20 announces a series of live shows.Â
Discworld TTRPG Kickstarter Breaks $1 MillionÂ
After The record-breaking success of the Avatar RPG and Cosmere RPG, big things are expected of the Kickstarter debut of Discworld RPG. While there was a GURPS Discworld game in the late 90s, this Kickstarter promises to bring to life a new, narrative, pun-based TTRPG of Sir Terry Prachett’s beloved universe.Â
The crowdfunding campaign has been a massive success from the start, already reaching well past its goal and going above $1 million raised. Rewards consist of the usual TTRPG fare such as dice, a GM screen, and collector’s edition copies of the books featuring art by Paul Kidby.
Chris Perkins Ends Time As DnD Product Lead With 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide
During the press previews for the 2024 DMG, Chris Perkins told Polygon that it’s his last book as product lead. That said, he also mentions that he contributed a lot to the 2025 Monster Manual and upcoming Starter Set. So as of now, he hasn’t officially announced any kind of exit from Wizards of the Coast. There does seem to be a new age dawning at the DnD office with departures like Greg Titio’s, but Perkins appears to be sticking around at least for the near future. Â
DnD Ditches 6-8 Encounter Adventuring DayÂ
A series of 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide previews from EN World reveal that DMs are no longer advised to run six to eight encounters per day. Instead, DMs are now given XP budgets to spend on monsters per each encounter. There’s also sections discussing pacing in both a narrative and gameplay sense.Â
The 2014 DMG recommends that DMs make an “adventuring day” that consists of a minimum of six medium to hard encounters that could be combats, traps, or social challenges. The idea seemed to be resource attrition, forcing players to strategize with their spell slots and features. That style has been unpopular in recent years, however, with most players preferring the power fantasy that comes with always having a cool trick up their sleeve.Â
Dimension 20 Live Returns For West Coast Tour
Dropout announced a short tour of Dimension 20: Live consisting of three events in Seattle, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas. Each show will have a different storyline but all feature Brennan Lee Mulligan as Game Master and a cast of Emily Axford, Ally Beardsley, Brian Murphy, Zac Oyama, Siobhan Thompson and Lou Wilson.
The LA show happens on June 1, 2025. The Seattle event is on July 20, and the Las Vegas show is on November 1, 2025. Tickets go on sale on October 22 through Ticketmaster, while general sales take place through LiveNation on the 25th.Â
