Kids on Brooms is such a fun and unique system that I really enjoy running and playing!! The mechanics are so different from what I've seen in other systems and it's really easy to just pick up and play. You can really adapt it to any kind of story and world you want to be in, and the fact that the GM and players create the world and NPCs in the system is such a great way to get everyone quickly invested into the world and story you're telling together.
I love, LOVE, love Kids on Brooms. It allows you to have a fun, RP forward story in a magical school without having to bring in She Who Must Not Be Named. The character creation for the systems does a great job of leaning on tropes to help you decide on a character that then translates mechanically really easily. Also, the phenomena of exploding dice (i.e. you rolled a 4 on your d4? you get to roll it again and count that towards your roll) makes every roll exciting, even if you are drastically undermatched for the challenge. Also, folks tend to sleep on the fact that they way magic run in this system can let players who want a little more crunch get really creative!
How to Play Kids on Brooms
Learn the rules to Kids on Brooms in less than eight minutes with this video! There are six stats in Kids on Brooms, Brains, Brawn, Fight, Flight, Charm, and Grit. You'll assign one of six dice, from the d20 down through the d12, d10, d8, d6, and d4 to each of these stats, with the biggest dice representing your talents, and the smallest representing your weaknesses. In challenging situations, you'll roll the die associated with the stat you're using against a target number set by the game master. If you roll higher than the target number, you succeed! If you fail, you gain adversity tokens, which you can use to benefit you later. Additionally, if you roll the highest value on your die, that die explodes, and you can roll it again and add the result to your total. In combat, this roll is opposed, and the difference in results determines who wins, and how bad it is for the loser.
Kids on Brooms also has a free-form system for casting spells and brewing potions, where you can describe the effect you want to achieve, and the game master sets an appropriate difficulty based on a number of factors, including how powerful this effect is, how familiar you are with the spell, and how long you need it to last, etc. You'll roll as normal to achieve what you want!
Character Creation in Kids on Bikes, Kids on Brooms, and Teens in Space
Kids on Bikes, Kids on Brooms, and Teens in Space all share a basic core mechanical system between them, so if you know how to make characters in one, it's easy to get started in another! In this video, you'll learn the basics that apply to every game in the series, as well as some of the specifics depending on the game you choose.
You'll start by choosing a trope for your character, sort of like a class or playbook, that gives their high concept and general character archetype. Then you'll assign a die size to each of their six stats: Brains, Brawn, Fight, Flight, Charm and Grit, from a d20 in their best stat, down through a d12, d10, d8, d6, and d4 in the rest. Then you'll answer some questions about who your character is and how they relate to the other characters in the group, and choose some strengths and weaknesses, mechanical benefits and detriments based on your characters' talents, skills, or personality.
If you're playing Kids on Bikes, you'll pick your character's age. If you're playing Teens in Space, you'll pick their species (are they an alien?) and get some points to improve your character or the ship they share with their crew! If you're playing Kids on Brooms, you'll choose your character's grade, their magical familiar, their wand, and their broom, each of which provides a few benefits.
