StartPlaying is back with another edition of tabletop gaming news! We round up the week’s biggest items with a focus on TTRPGs and bring them to you so you know what’s going on with your favorite games. This week, dungeon crawlers are now a dictionary phrase, 2024 DnD rules add magic item crafting, WotC seeks a product manager for IP collaboration, and Baldur's Gate 3 companions take figure form.

Merriam-Webster Dictionary Adds Dungeon Crawler

The dictionary now recognizes one of the oldest genres of RPG. Merriam-Webster added 200 new entries to the English dictionary, reports EN World, including "dungeon crawler." Oddly, the given definition refers to the genre primarily as a video game despite its heavy association with Dungeons & Dragons.

According to the official definition, a dungeon crawler is "a video game where the gameplay is primarily focused on defeating enemies while exploring a usually randomly generated labyrinthine or dungeon-like environment."

Dungeon Master's Guide 2024 Previews Magic Item Crafting Rules And Loot Tables

The much-anticipated magic item section of 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide got some spotlight this week. Wizards of the Coast released a video where Chris Perkins and James Wyatt went over the chapter on treasure which includes magic item crafting and personalization.

Magic item crafting rules make their debut in 5E with this DMG. A character must have proficiency in the appropriate tool to make the physical item, have enough gold to cover materials, put the time in to craft, and know any spells that might go into the item.

Another useful addition is guidance on what monsters might be holding what magic items so that DMs can plan loot more meaningfully within their story.

Wizards Of The Coast Hiring Posts Illuminating Job Listing

WotC put out yet another revealing job post in the past few days. This time it’s for a Product Architect. The role is mainly responsible for designing products adjacent to the actual game books. To no one’s surprise, the listing puts a large emphasis on a need for experience with digital products and working with engineering teams.

The stated duties of the path continue to show two major priorities for WotC. Digital tools and platforms are mentioned several times as D&D Beyond continues to be a growing pillar of the brand. Another duty is “co-created releases featuring external IP” which hints at more IP being brought into the game in the vein of Stranger Things or Rick and Morty.

Baldur's Gate 3 Official Minis On The Way From Wizkids

Preferred DnD miniature maker Wizkids announced a new collection based on the characters of Baldur's Gate 3. A boxed set will have all the main party members and Withers, while blind boxes will have up to 40 figures ranging from generic monsters to prominent NPCs like Dame Aylin. 26 of the 40 figures have been previewed with product renders, showing how the game’s art style translates into sculpted figures.

That’s the last story for this week! Thanks for choosing us as your news source. Now get back to crawling those dungeons, and may your dice be kind!
