About the adventure

Every child has a favorite toy. Sometimes it's an action figure, a doll they identify with, an old toy passed down through their family, or a stuffed animal they had during traumatic events. They help build confidence, overcome fears, build character, and grow the child's imagination. Entire worlds, personalities, and stories are constructed for these loveable little fellows, all powered by the imagination. In the world of the Mighty Protectors, the toys of children are empowered to protect their tiny friends from things that go bump in the night. However, most assist primarily in the dreams of their children and rarely have to do much more than that. However, those who belong to the child Rosalie have a different life. Her imagination is incredibly active, affecting the world her toys find themselves in. It's so active that her fears can manifest as entities in the waking world that her toys have to fight off. This requires them to arm themselves with the tools necessary to keep her fears from becoming real - at least real enough to impact her waking life. Enter the world of the Mighty Protectors, those toys tasked with protecting their very imaginative Child from the creatures and ghosts of her fears. Take up arms with toy-sized yet surprisingly effective weapons, child-crafted armor forged from glittery felt and Mom's leftover fabric, and the cool suits and guns from Brother's collection of GI Joes. Take on the role of one of her Protectors: Sir William the Brave, an armored teddy bear who was her first stuffed animal and her closest friend; Sir Edward the Bold, a black stuffed cat with light-up eyes who is, somehow, William's brother and thinks he's Batman; Scarlet the Big Hat Lady, a doll that belonged to Mom and is the prettiest of lady's that has cool magic and you can't tell her otherwise; Debbie the Patchwork Doll, an old fabric doll from Granny that's been repaired a lot and has a mystical connection to the wise Grand Mom; Inigo the Mouseketeer, a mouse chew toy Rosalie took from the family dog and dressed up as a fencer and gave a "Spanish" accent; and Sergeant Sarge, a former Barbie doll kitted out with the soldier gear from Brother's GI Joes (she's the coolest 'cause she has a gun AND can tell you what to do!) Not everything is as it seems, however. After learning her father's business may be bought by a larger company, Rosalie's fears have changed. The normal entities that plague the night during her slumber seem to be changing despite the reassurances of her family. They will learn there is much they do not already know and will need to travel far and wide to get the answers they seek to fix their Child's fears. Just not where they expect...

Recruiting notes

If you are in need of a laidback, light, funny, and whimsical story with few heavy moments, then this is the game for you! Choose a character, choose between the classes or subclasses available to it (and suggest any if it makes sense) then take control of it and take part in a story told through the lens of a child. You're limited to what she knows, but that means you can make up what she might know about a subject as soon as it happens - she's very imaginative so there is the potential for incredible world-building! Defend your child from her manifested nightmares, explore a sleeping household while avoiding Cheshire the cat, attempt to gain the services of Franky the dog, and defeat the monsters of nightmares that seek to ruin your child's self-worth and mental health. Be warned! There is much behind this radical growth in fears and anxieties, which may bring you somewhere you didn't expect... Thank you for your time, and have a wonderful remainder of your day.

How to prepare

You will need a working microphone and an account on Discord to participate in the campaign. A working web browser will be needed to connect to the Foundry VTT session we will be using that houses the additional content, character sheets, and other aspects of our game. Ability scores have already been rolled and applied to each character as applicable. Equipment such as weapons and armor have been given to each character, though enchanted or unique items will be up to the player's discretion.

What I provide

I will be providing the VTT through Foundry due to its module nature and ease of implementing homebrew items. This comes with maps, tokens, character sheets, enemies, and campaign content. The characters have already been made but choices can be made for what abilities, spells, and capabilities for these premade characters for whomever chooses to play them. During Session 0, players will choose from the list of characters and which class for that character where applicable - William, Edward, Sarge, and Inigo have class alternatives that can be looked over. With adequate preparation, additional alternatives can be implemented if the currently available choices are not interesting. Once good music is found I will implement it. Combat will be tactical and interesting, relying on cover and barriers to keep characters safe during combat scenes. As this is a goofy setting and campaign, doing cool, comedic things with the Rule of Cool is more preferred than doing strict RAW - these are toys powered by the imagination, of course they can do cool things! This is a story and setting I am very proud of, and I hope you become engaged and interested in its characters, story, and honestly silly story concepts. I've spent quite a while getting everything where it is able to be playable, so I hope you enjoy it should you choose to participate in it.

Gameplay details

The setting of this campaign is designed to be cute, whimsical, goofy, and bright. While there will be elements of combat and creepy monsters, the goal is to be very limiting in potential triggers and to be open to anyone who wants to play a silly campaign with silly concepts for fun. These concepts will be discussed during Session 0, and breaks will be taken generally around the halfway mark or when it suits the group. I have a zero-tolerance policy for mistreatment of fellow players and those who choose to take negative stances where "it's what my character would do" or promote a phobic mindset are not welcome. Toxic acts, statements, and roleplay are not welcome. We're here to have fun and escape from reality for a bit. This is a homebrew setting utilizing races centered around animated toys with changes made to the weapons, armor, and abilities made available for D&D5e in the VTT we will be using. All other aspects of 5th Edition will be available, though we will be staying with the 2014 rules and not the 2024 rules - I don't have the book or the compendium stuff for it yet so I don't feel comfortable using it without getting more familiar with what it changes.

How will character creation work

All of the characters available to play as have already been created, and below you can find a brief blurb about them. Once a character is chosen, you can choose 2 unique items for them - one Common and one Uncommon magic item for them each to have, either in the form of their weapon/armor or something else that you think would help them somehow in their endeavors. William, a teddy bear Paladin (Devotion) or Fighter (Banneret) Level 3, can wield a lance one-handed as long as he has a shield in the other hand and can empower allies nearby with defensive buffs. Edward, a stuffed black cat Rogue (Thief) or Ranger (Gloom Stalker) Level 3, can use his eyes to intimidate people and is very good at investigating clues and can track almost anything. Scarlet, a vintage doll similar to Barbie Sorcerer (Aberrant Mind Origin or another subclass) Level 3, she is very persuasive, beautiful, and very knowledgeable about most everything (based on Mom who is the most beautiful person on the planet.) Debbie, a very old fabric doll covered in patches Warlock (Great Old One Pact or another subclass) Level 3, an expert in magic and spooky stuff, has a magical connection to Granny (her Patron) and is very worldly in her knowledge. Inigo, a mouse chew toy meant for a pet Bard (Swords) or Fighter (Champion), a dextrous duelist wielding a rapier who uses dance and funny phrases to keep his enemies off balance, and is fluent in "Spanish" which is really French but Rosalie thinks it's Spanish. Sergeant Sarge, a Barbie doll in GI Joe equipment who leads the other Joes that Brother has collected. She is a Ranger (Monster Slayer) or Fighter (Battle Master) Level 3, and is the only toy trained in the use of modern weaponry - such as guns and ballistic armor - and leads a squad of trained soldiers to help with reconnaissance and delaying enemies.
