Fantasy Grounds

Fantasy Grounds

Fantasy Grounds is a longstanding virtual tabletop for roleplaying games best known for the depth and richness of its features and customization. Fantasy Grounds is an application that one player, typically the game master, hosts on their computer. Players in their campaign can download the demo version of the application and join that campaign. Fantasy Grounds has all the features players expect from a virtual tabletop: maps, tokens, rules libraries, character sheets, dice rollers, fog of war, and standard automation. But it also includes customization options and themes that make it feel almost like a completely bespoke application from game to game; Fantasy Grounds offers a bevy of bells and whistles to any game that, while they have a bit of a learning curve, can make each campaign completely unique. On top of that, it has prebuilt toolsets and modules for a huge library of games readily available for download or purchase. Fantasy Grounds is a "heavy-duty" virtual tabletop that can do practically anything. It takes a bit of practice to learn how to use, but the people who love its maximalist options are passionate and lifelong fans.

Fantasy Grounds Unity Quickstart Guide Part 1

The first in a two-part video that explains how to set up and use Fantasy Grounds. While the video uses Dungeons & Dragons 5e as an example, much of what it explains is applicable to any game. It covers using the launcher screen to create or join a campaign, download modules, or access settings and guides. It'll also teach new game masters how to use their license key to unlock their version of Fantasy Grounds.

Next, you'll learn the basics of creating, joining, or reopening an existing campaign. You can set up your campaign with any custom modules, content you own, and options right at the start, as well as load in additional modules (or remove those you'd prefer your players not be able to access) later. From there, you can set up shortcuts and hotbars, assets like maps, images, and tokens, organize story pages of your campaign, and learn how to show and share pieces of information or handouts with your players.

Lastly, this video covers character creation and character sheet setup.

Fantasy Grounds Unity Quickstart Guide Part 2

In the second part of Fantasy Grounds quickstart video, you can learn the finer points of running a campaign on Fantasy Grounds. Again, the video uses Dungeons & Dragons 5e as an example.

This video teaches you how to set up a party panel for quickly referencing the information and abilities of the characters in your party, distributing items and experience points, and making hidden rolls. You'll also learn how to use the combat tracker to track initiative, hit points, and other combat stats automatically.

Next you'll learn how to find and share a map or image, set up its walls, fog of war, lighting, and visibility. From there, you can add NPCs and set up an encounter, and the video includes a sample combat encounter as a demonstration.
