About the adventure

In 2077, nuclear war reduced most of the planet to ashes. Your great-grandparents took shelter in Vault 13 as the bombs fell, and there they stayed for the remainder of their lives. Now in your time the vault is beginning to show its age and the Overseer asks you and your friends to venture out into the wasteland to find a replacement for the vault's failing waterchip. The Modiphius 2d20 version of the Fallout RPG is fast, fun, and dynamic. You will have the opportunity to interact with the post-apocalyptic world through exploration, social interactions, crafting, settlement building, and of course, a lot of harrowing combat. This campaign is based on the events of the original Fallout: A Post Nuclear Role Playing Game and will be a treat for players who have experienced the original or would just like to experience a taste of the franchise's past.

How to prepare

You will need either a PC or Mac compatible PC with broadband internet access and electricity to play in this game, a mouse with left and right buttons, as well as a third button and mouse wheel is optimal for online use of Fantasy Grounds Unity. You will need a Discord account to access the pregame chat and get installation instructions for the free versions of Fantasy Grounds Unity and Syrinscape Online Player (Beta). The Fantasy Grounds Unity client must be installed before gameplay and updated one hour before the game starts to ensure version cross-compatibility. Fantasy Ground Unity is required, but Syrinscape is optional; it does however, add to the overall immersion of the game if you can hear atmospheric and event sounds. If you intend to speak in the voice channel on Discord, you should have a headset with a microphone. You will be required to set up a push-to-talk button [no one wants to hear you clip your toenails next to your microphone when it’s not your turn], you are, however, free to communicate to the group using text only in Discord, but you will then need speakers to hear their chat and the game sounds. Special text-only sessions are available for the hearing impaired. Please contact me if you’d like to schedule one. Bringing a friend or two would help ensure we don’t need to recruit additional players. While text-only is actually my preferred method of play, it does seem difficult to organize those games. Instructions for setting up the push-to-talk button and installing all the needed software are available on my Discord channel (#getting-started), to which you will be supplied a link when you join. You could read the quick start rules to Fallout 2d20 if you like, but, the system is quick and intuitive, so you’ll have the opportunity to learn through playing the game.

What I provide

I provide the ruleset and scenario and my Ultimate Fantasy Grounds license allows you to join into the fun using the free/demo version.

Gameplay details

This campaign has content consistent with the Fallout game series. There are descriptions and discussions about potential bodily harm, violence, warfare, disease, economic hardship, science, social justice, mathematics, and politics in what might be regarded PG-13 presentation. If any of these topics are a red line for you, these games might not be a good fit. We will use a Yellow Card—Red Card system that any player can utilize if the scene is getting too intense; the use of these cards is done through clicking on an icon on the Fantasy Grounds screen, it is anonymous which player presented the card, but I will take immediate action when one is presented. A Yellow Card lets us fade-to-black and continue with the story on the other side of the disturbing content; a Red Card stops the game and invokes a 15-minute break. After the break, we can discuss what was going wrong and how we can best fix it for the group.

How will character creation work

We will create player characters together during the campaign's session zero so we can all be on the same page about what type of campaign the group wants and how those characters can best support each other for an interesting story. Players joining after Session 0 can create characters through consultation with the GM outside of normal game time.
