About liam fox

I'm a passionate GM and world builder, who enjoys creating games where the players' decisions truly shape the world. While my tabletop game mastering experience revolves mostly around D&D 5e, I can design and implement various game systems, settings, creatures, mechanics, adventures and more upon request. As a GM, I focus mostly on open-sandbox style adventures with living worlds with elements of mystery, political intrigue, heist planning, character driven subplots, exploration, combat, lighthearted fable-style adventures and bloodcurdling horror. I'll design an entire region and its lore, creatures and NPCs for my players to interact with, but leave the decision of what to do in this ancient crypt or that forbidden magic tower to the players. The most rewarding experiences are always the ones where the story goes in a direction no one expected.

I started running games because...

I started writing and running my own games because I loved creating worlds that felt alive and giving players the freedom to shape them. I wanted more than just following a prewritten story—I wanted to build places, characters, and adventures that could change based on the choices people made.

People are always surprised when I tell them

People are always surprised when I tell them how much of my games I build completely from scratch—from the worlds, lore, factions, NPCs, and monsters to custom mechanics, encounters, progression systems, and sometimes even entire rule sets.

The three words my players would use to describe me are...

Immersive, creative, and adaptable.

How liam fox runs games

My style is focused on giving the players as much freedom and immersion as possible in the game world, while still keeping the game meaningful and impactful. I like to put emphasis on getting a large world with engaging NPCs, mysteries to solve, creatures to fight and various events to be involved in, but without deciding someone’s story for them. I enjoy roleplaying, and love it when player characters develop bonds with NPCs and other entities in the game world, and like to give rewards to players for good behavior both in and out of combat. I also like to make fights challenging and tactical, and have variety in terms of mechanics, and often use terrain, smart enemies, unique monster traits and abilities, secondary objectives and opportunities to escape, negotiate or otherwise avoid a direct fight. I enjoy exploration, both in terms of finding things and simply being able to find things, and put a strong emphasis on finding ancient crypts, creatures, treasure and other things for the players to find and interact with, as well as getting to know the world and it’s mysteries one little secret at a time.

My favorite trope is...

My favorite trope is when something beautiful, familiar, or seemingly safe is hiding something deeply unsettling underneath. I love that slow realization that the world isn’t quite what the players thought it was.

My games focus on...

My games focus on immersive worlds, meaningful player choices, strong character moments, exploration, and consequences that actually matter. I like giving players the freedom to shape the story while making sure the world reacts to what they do.

Rules are...

Rules are the framework that keeps the game fair and consistent, but they should never get in the way of a great story. I follow the rules closely, make clear rulings when needed, and leave room for creative ideas when the situation calls for it.

liam fox's ideal table

My table style is immersive, collaborative, and heavily player-driven. I like creating a strong sense of atmosphere and giving players a world that feels alive, responsive, and worth exploring. I aim for a healthy balance of roleplay, exploration, combat, mystery, and humor, while adjusting that balance based on what the group is enjoying most. I keep enough structure in place to make sure the game stays focused and everyone has time in the spotlight, but I do not want players to feel like they are being pushed down a predetermined path. Creative solutions, unexpected decisions, and completely derailed plans are all part of the fun. I want choices to matter, consequences to feel real, and the story to feel like something we created together rather than something the players simply watched unfold.

I think metagaming...

I am not interested in policing every little thing. Sometimes a bit of out-of-character knowledge keeps the game moving or helps the group avoid unnecessary frustration. For me, the important part is that metagaming never takes away from immersion, character decisions, or another player’s moment.

My perfect party mix is

The best groups are the ones that can take serious moments seriously, laugh when things go completely off the rails, and still come together when the story calls for it. I do not need everyone to play the same way—I just want players who are engaged, respectful, creative, and genuinely excited.

My table is not the place for...

My table is not the place for disrespect, harassment, bigotry, bullying, or behavior that makes other players uncomfortable. I also do not allow unwanted PvP, constant rules-lawyering, spotlight hogging, or intentionally disruptive play that takes away from everyone else’s experience.
