Hunter: The Reckoning

A Storytelling Game of Desperate Measures. You saw what you shouldn’t have, the veil pulled back from the secret world and the monsters who prowl it. You chronicled the tragedies they wrought, these monsters, and the victims upon whom they preyed. You grasped the extent of their influence and witnessed the corruption of the organizations formed to keep them in check. And you vowed to do something about it. Tonight, you act. It’s time for a Reckoning.

Hunter: The Reckoning is unique in the World of Darkness game. In this game you are not a monster. You are the one who hunts the Monsters. You play a group of Hunters who are working together to keep the darkness at bay, despite how dangerous it is. All you have to rely on is your code, and your friends. Its the ultimate underdog story, and with a good group of players it can lead you to some awesome sessions and an amazing story.

What makes Hunter special is its razor-sharp focus on ordinary people thrust into extraordinary circumstances. You're not a vampire with supernatural powers or a werewolf with primal strength - you're a regular person who's seen the truth: monsters are real, and someone has to stop them. The 5th Edition amplifies this concept with its Desperation system, which brilliantly mechanizes the psychological toll of the hunt. The more you push yourself, the closer you come to breaking - but giving up isn't an option when innocent lives are at stake. If you love a gritty experience where you are almost always outmatched, this is the one for you! But uh, bring extra character sheets just in case.

So you want to hunt monsters? Great! But hold on—before you grab your stakes and shotguns, Hunter: The Reckoning 5th Edition wants to remind you that you are NOT Blade, the Winchester brothers, or an elite squad of Vatican monster-killers. Nope, you’re just a regular person who saw something horrifying and decided to fight back, despite having no real powers, little resources, and a life expectancy shorter than a teenager in a slasher movie. The game leans hard into street-level horror, where Hunters are disorganized, paranoid, and probably doomed, but they still keep fighting because someone has to. There is no grand conspiracy backing you up—just a handful of misfits, some half-baked strategies, and the hope that you don’t end up a missing person.* Pros: ✔ The tone is perfect—you are desperate, outmatched, and terrified, but you keep going anyway. ✔ The investigation and tension-building mechanics shine—it’s not just about combat; it’s about figuring out what’s happening before you die. ✔ Every monster is stronger than you—which means fights are rare, brutal, and something to AVOID, not seek out. ✔ Fantastic for one-shots—you don’t need a long campaign; short, intense horror sessions are where this game thrives. Cons: ✘ This is NOT a long-term game. The Reckoning in the title? Yeah, that’s your life expectancy. ✘ No superpowers, no cool toys, just vibes and trauma. If you wanted a power fantasy, this ain’t it. ✘ Hunters feel disconnected—without compacts and conspiracies, your group is just randoms with trust issues, making teamwork shaky at best. ✘ Combat is a last resort. If you try to play this like Vampire or Werewolf, you will die. Final Verdict: If you want gritty, realistic horror where your best weapon is a flashlight, a half-baked plan, and sheer spite, Hunter: The Reckoning 5th Edition delivers an amazing short-term experience. If you want a game with big monster-slaying arcs, conspiracies, and cool gear, you’ll get frustrated fast. 6/10 - Perfect for One-Shots, Terrifying for Campaigns.

How to play Hunter: The Reckoning

Hunter: The Reckoning utilizes White Wolf's Storyteller System and a pool of ten-sided dice (d10s). When a character encounters a task or obstacle, the Storyteller (Game Master) will ask them to make a roll. To do this, the player will take as many d10s as the sum of the points they have in the Attribute and Skill required for the test, and roll this pool of dice. Any roll of 6 or higher on the die is a success, and if your total number of successes beats the number you need for the test, you are successful!
