About the adventure

It's Halloween! A time for making merry, celebrating the spooky, and consuming a unhealthy amount of sugar in colorful forms. While the concept of Halloween itself doesn't exist in most fantasy realms, it's spirit can be felt across the multiverse. For our purposes, that spirit is going to manifest in a bunch of adventurers dressing up in costumes and exploring Gonraith Manor, a spooky mansion, in search of Treats. A simple 5th-level adventure chock full of seasonal surprises approachable by players of any skill level.

How to prepare

Make sure you have a working installation of Zoom, a microphone, and somewhere relatively quiet to play. While cameras are encouraged, they are not required for this game. If you are building your own character then make sure to get me a copy of, or link to, your character sheet in advance of the game. Otherwise there will be pregenerated ones handy for you. That's it! Assuming you have an even basic understanding of the rules of D&D 5th Edition then I should be able to handle the rest.

What I provide

Pregenerated characters, random tables of Tricks and Treats, a map of Gonraith Manor with dynamic lighting and atmospheric music, and other little ways to help enhance your experience. But more important than that, I bring 20+ years of experience behind the DM screen and boundless enthusiasm for the game. My goal here is to give you a fun Halloween experience that you can remember fondly.

Gameplay details

While this should be a pretty light game tonally, the trappings of a spooky haunted mansion with monsters in it can be unpleasant or triggering for some on their own. If that ever comes up, bring it up and we will pause the session and either rollback events or change course depending on the situation. This is meant to be zany and silly not legitimately scary, and this will be discussed again at the beginning of the session. Regarding gameplay, there will be a fair bit of combat involved but it isn't meant to be incredibly challenging so don't feel like you need to optimize your characters. You can roll up your own 5th level character, or use one of the pregenerated ones provided. There will be a good chunk of homebrewed magical effects and creatures, but all in the name of having a good time, so nothing you'll have to worry about defeating. Roleplaying is encouraged, but be aware that the situations these characters will find themselves in border on the absurd, so maybe don't shoot for high drama.

How will character creation work

There will be a handful of thematic pregenerated characters to choose from at the start of the session if you don't want to build your own. If you do want to build a character, create a 5th level character that uses options from the Player's Handbook and/or Tasha's Cauldron of Everything. The Lucky feat is not allowed, but basically anything else in those books is fair game. If you want to use something else, please reach out to me at least a few hours before the game. At the start of the session, your character will also be choosing a Costume to wear. This costume, in addition to being traditional and fashionable, provides a minor magical effect to help you on your adventure. There will be several costumes to choose from but if you come up with an idea for what your character would want to dress up as, then tell me in advance and I'll come up with an appropriate effect for it.
