About the adventure

The Mists are not kind, neither are they hostile. They don't create, bless or save. Once you've been through them - a second meeting will surely bring only destruction. Whisked away by this phenomena, you meet yourselves in a bleak, tired land - a land of Barovia, ruled by its tyrannical master Strahd von Zarovich. He is the Ancient. He is the Land. His are the rights to everything in Barovia - including fresh adventurers brought by his will. Find out if your path in this land will be one of heroic crusade or slow, horrific persistence. Or maybe you'll find yourselves alongside the tyrannical ruler of the lands? A tale dating back to 1983, "Curse of Strahd" is a classic example of a gothic horror adventure. The Vampire, Strahd Von Zarovich, is a staple of how vampires are not bleak trite enemies they've sometimes been portrayed as. Over the years, Ravenloft setting expanded, incorporating a lot of nuance, yet keeping true to its roots - and with the resurgence of its popularity in fifth edition of Dungeons&Dragons - CoS has never been as perfect of a tale, with all the expanded folklore and dramatic storytelling of its setting.

Gameplay details

This adventure is going to take you through levels 1 to ~11-14, depending on your actions and the overall story arcs. However, I should note that this campaign is, after all, "Curse of Strahd". It's not a typical High Fantasy campaign. It's a beautiful story leaning heavily on Shakespearean drama and gothic horror tropes - and while the characters are the ones finishing its ending, uncovering the story takes a big chunk of the adventure. Basically, think of it as of delving into a book - we're here to have a good time and enjoy the story we're writing together, but please do go in with the intent of weaving the story in one tone with your friends. Now, as for the Safety Tools: 1. Pre-game discussion. While this adventure is heavy on the horror tropes, it's also very character-driven and the world of Barovia is not a bright place. However, the way I run it has generally been safe - we're definitely going to set up some lines that should not be crossed and/or focused on in the story and the character agenda WILL have an impact on things that might seem bleak and desperate - if they so desire. 2. Timeouts, Direct messages. At my table, players are encouraged to have an open line of communication with DM(usually preferring messages in discord) and if you find something personally unpleasant - I'll steer the story away from it, lessen its impact and possibly direct the group to have a short break in no way implicating the player. 3. If none of those things work - the table is obviously open should you desire a break yourself or think that I might not have understood your message, for example. However, in my experience it's never reached that degree and seeing as this campaign is preferably booked by groups of people - it's just an option which we'll discuss at session 0.
