Another week down, another round of news from the tabletop RPG world! Here are this week’s biggest happenings in the industry, delivered in a few quick headlines so you can get back to fireballing every room.
This week: Card game Munchkin comes to TTRPG, word on the DnD movie’s potential sequel, a new Unearthed Arcana with Underdark theming, and Steve Jackson makes a career move.
Munchkin 5e Is Now A Thing
The card game Munchkin is getting a TTRPG spinoff, and it’s powered by 5.5e. Munchkin maker Steve Jackson Games is teaming up with Lynnvander Studios to deliver Munchkin 5.5E RPG. There’s a pre-launch page on BackerKit that showcases the iconic Munchkin art style, subclasses like the Oath of Killjoy Paladin, and lots and lots of bonus loot like The Deck of Ridiculous Things. The crossover itself consists of two books: Munchkin 5.5e Ye Olde Rulebook with rules and player content compatible with DnD 5.5e, and The Deadliest Dungeon. Crowdfunding will go live in October.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Sequel Is Written, But Needs A Studio
The DnD movie Honor Among Thieves has a sequel ready, but Hasbro needs a studio partner to bring it to life. EN world reports, as per the Discourse Podcast, that the writer/director team behind the movie have a sequel script written. Honor Among Thieves had a $150 million budget and made $208 million at the global box office, which is considered a disappointment even if it’s not a bomb. Writers/directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein attributed the performance to several factors like being against the uper Mario Bros. Movie and the OGL debacle just having happened. The movie was praised by critics and fans alike, but the underwhelming box office makes it a tough sell to studios.
DnD Unearthed Arcana Goes Back To The Underdark
The DnD Team sent out another batch of playtest player options themed around the Underdark. The new species lean more into the fantastical, letting you be a Myconid, Kuo-Toa, Deep Imaskari, Illithidkin, and even a Drider. Three new subclasses include a Dex-based Freedom Cleric, radiation-based Faerzress Sorcerer, and the 5.5e Circle of Spore Druid. The user survey releases on September 17 for official feedback, but for now it seems a lot of fans enjoy the flavor but are divided on the Sorcerer subclass.
Steve Jackson No Longer CEO Of Steve Jackson Games
Steve Jackson has stepped down as CEO of his eponymous company to focus more on game design. Jackson was serving in the role temporarily after the CEO resigned last year. His replacement will be Sabrina Gonzalez, reports ICv2, a company regular since 2013.
That’s all for this week! Thanks for reading, and may your dice be kind.
Sergio Solórzano is the best Dungeon Master in the USA (according to an official D&D competition, anyway). He loves minis and terrain but also goes all-in on improv!
