If you've never played a tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG) before, Brindlewood Bay is a fantastic introduction. Be sure to check out the games that are forming now! It’s a game where you and your friends take on the roles of elderly amateur sleuths—think Murder, She Wrote meets Golden Girls—who become entangled in eerie, supernatural mysteries, slowly uncovering the darkness around them like Twin Peaks or Call of Cthulhu. With its mix of cozy crime-solving and creeping horror, the game encourages collaborative storytelling, where uncovering clues is just as important as sharing moments over tea and knitting. This guide will walk you through the process of creating your first Murder Maven step by step. So go ahead and grab the character documents here.
Step 1: Name And Concept
Your character, known as a Murder Maven, is a retired woman with a passion for mystery-solving. Start by choosing a name that evokes the right feel. You can pick something classic, quirky, or old-fashioned—whatever fits your vision.
Some fun examples:
- Beatrice "Bea" Hawthorne
- Eleanor "Ellie" Finch
- Margaret "Maggie" Sinclair
- Josephine "Jo" Davenport
- Winifred "Winnie" Holloway
Next, think about her background. Was she a librarian? A former detective? A baker with a knack for noticing details? This backstory helps shape her personality and style.
Step 2: Style
A Maven’s style isn’t just about what she wears, but how she approaches the world around her. It’s a reflection of her personality, whether she’s glamorous or casual, quirky or elegant. The clothes change by occasion, but the style is always present! The style you choose for your character can help shape how they interact with others and solve mysteries. The character sheet has several examples. Here is what each looks like:
- ‍Alexis Carrington Colby – Think bold, glamorous, and always in control. She exudes confidence and sophistication, making an impression wherever she goes. This style might fit if your character is a power player who likes to be noticed.‍
- Jackie O – Classic and elegant. This style speaks to someone refined, poised, and likes to keep things understated yet fashionable. Jackie O might be a perfect fit if your Maven is calm under pressure and carries herself with grace.‍
- All the Cardigans – Cozy, approachable, and practical. This style suggests a person who’s comfortable in their own skin, warm-hearted, and down-to-earth. If your character is someone who enjoys being around others and values comfort, this style fits.‍
- Martha’s Vineyard – Fresh, preppy, and timeless, this style is about relaxed sophistication and a love for nature or leisure. If your Maven enjoys outdoor activities, a little bit of class, and a touch of tradition, this could be the style for her.‍
- Blouse Barn – Practical and comfortable but with a touch of personality, the Blouse Barn Maven is casual but doesn’t shy away from making an impression. It’s perfect for a character who enjoys simplicity and practicality but likes to keep things interesting.‍
- Office Hours – Polished, professional, and organized, this style is perfect for a character who’s no-nonsense, sharp, and confident. If your Maven works in an office environment or likes to keep things neat and orderly, this might be a good choice.
- Dorothy Zbornak – Sarcastic, witty, and stylish in an understated way. Dorothy’s style will fit perfectly if your Maven is a no-nonsense type who isn’t afraid to speak her mind. She’s practical, but always sharp.‍
- Speed Walkin’ – Active, energetic, and always on the move. This style is for a character who’s constantly in motion—walking, jogging, or always getting things done. If your Maven is energetic, enthusiastic, and enjoys staying active, this style is for her.‍
- Goin’ Fishin’ – Laid-back, casual, and rugged, this style suggests a person who enjoys the simpler things in life, perhaps with a love for the outdoors. This style may suit her well if your Maven is more about comfort and adventure.‍
- Up in Pumps – Classy and ready for anything. This style is for someone who likes to keep things polished, often wearing heels or dressy attire. If your character has a bit of flair and likes to be stylish while staying prepared for whatever comes her way, this style could be a great fit.
- Hippy Dippy – Free-spirited, bohemian, and laid-back, this style reflects a Maven who embraces individuality and the unconventional. If your character values personal freedom and creativity, this style might speak to her.
Step 3: Assign Ability Ratings
Each Murder Maven has four abilities:
- Reason – Logical thinking and puzzle-solving skills.
- Presence – Charisma and social influence.
- Composure – Keeping calm under pressure.
- Sensitivity – Connection to supernatural forces.
Every Maven starts with identical scores, but you get to increase one by +1. This should come from something in the Maven’s background. Did a brush with death open her up to the supernatural? Did she serve in the armed forces or in a hospital, which gave her more composure? Answering the question behind the improvement builds the character!Â
Step 4: Choose a Cozy Activity
In Brindlewood Bay, Mavens are not just amateur sleuths—they also lead full lives outside of solving eerie mysteries. Part of what makes the game so charming is the “cozy” aspect: the comforting, everyday activities that your character enjoys. These cozy activities are more than just hobbies—they can reveal much about who your Maven is and how she approaches life.
Your cozy activity will not only give you something fun to do during downtime in the game, but it will also serve as a way to bond with the other Mavens and uncover clues. It’s the significant activity that your character devotes their time and energy to doing. Think of it as a moment of respite between mysteries, where your character can reflect, relax, and recharge.
Some Examples:
- Knitting
- Gardening
- Baking
- Painting
- Writing Letters
- Biking
Step 5: Pick Your Maven Move!!
Your Maven Move is the choice that separates you from the other characters, and no one can have the same one! Looking at the reference sheet, read through the options and pick one. This choice might help you build your character’s past as well.Â
Ready to Solve Mysteries!
With your Murder Maven fully created, you’re set to dive into the mysteries of Brindlewood Bay. Trust your instincts, enjoy the storytelling, and uncover the eerie secrets lurking beneath the town’s quaint charm!
