We’ve got a quick tabletop RPG news update this week! But while the stories may be brief, they certainly aren’t light news. Dungeons & Dragons saw a big shift in its digital strategy, as Wizards of the Coast laid off 90% of the staff behind its big 3D VTT. Meanwhile, Free League launched a big Kickstarter campaign for an Alien RPG update. And Sirius Dice is honoring Earth Day with a premium product.
Wizards Of The Coast Makes Big Cuts On Sigil VTT
WotC looks to be cutting back heavily on its investment in Sigil, the big 3D virtual tabletop for DnD. According to reports, 90% of the Sigil team was laid off this month. This includes Andy Collins, a DnD vet who has ties going back to 1996. Other insider reports hinted at a general strategy shift within WotC. Allegedly, higher ups noticed the general lack of enthusiasm towards DnD’s “digital future” and are reversing course. The latest update is that Sigil is just going to become a map maker feature for D&D Beyond.
Alien RPG Kickstarter Evolves The Threat For More Exciting Play
Free League unleashed the next iteration of its acclaimed TTRPG based on the Alien movies. The Alien RPG Evolved Edition isn’t exactly a second edition, but the Kickstarter page does promise revised rules for several core systems. There’s also a greater emphasis on both miniatures and Alien Romulus, with different boxed sets including each. Add on the new core rulebook and cinematic adventure, and there’s four products available at different tiers. The Kickstarter is already at its funding goal and ends in April.
Sirius Dice DnD Dice Box Supports Earth Day
Sirius Dice announced a Wood Dice Vault with DnD branding as an Earth Day product. The wooden dice box has the DnD ampersand on top and holds up to 20 dice. It also has slots for a standard miniature and pens/pencils for writing on your character sheet. The Earth Day part is that for each box sold, Sirius will donate $10 for the planting of a tree. The Wood Dice Vault retails for $64.99 and releases April 22.
