About the adventure

In Veilbreak, the everyday hum of Minneapolis shatters when a roiling storm of multicolored lightning materializes above Loring Park’s Arts Festival. At its heart lies an ancient rupture in the Veil—one that spills echoes of arcane runes into neon-lit alleyways and awakens long-dormant forces beneath the Basilica of St. Mary. Your ordinary weekday stroll becomes the first step on a journey through hidden societies, whispered conspiracies, and the raw power of a world you never knew existed. This is a game for curious souls who love to peel back reality’s surface and chase down mysteries. You’ll play everyday professionals, students, artists—or anyone who thinks magic belongs only in folklore—until you discover that every street sign could be a ward, every coffee-shop mural a cryptic message. Themes of loss, hope, and the search for meaning pulse through each session, inviting you to confront what lies beyond grief—and what waiting power might reshape your life forever. I blend investigative intrigue with bursts of tactical action and cinematic role-play. Sessions flow on D&D 5E rules via D&D Beyond, Roll20 maps, and Discord voice chat, but you’ll rarely need to worry about the “right” call—improvisation and collaboration are our north stars. Expect scene-based structures with multiple entry points, organic world-building spun from your wildest theories, and a debrief that turns shared triumphs (and glorious failures) into the campaign’s living lore. Whether you’re a first-timer eager for an intro to D&D in a modern world, a seasoned tactician craving fresh supernatural twists, or a storyteller who revels in character-driven drama, Veilbreak welcomes you. Bring your curiosity, your courage, and a willingness to believe that magic is everywhere—if you only know where to look.

Game style

Rule of Cool (RoC)

“Rule of Cool” emphasizes creative story beats over sticking to a system’s rules as written. Players have the ability to push the limits of the rules or even break core rule mechanics at times if the Game Master thinks it is interesting, fun, or cool enough.

Combat Heavy

“Combat Heavy” games emphasize the combat mechanics within their systems over roleplay or puzzle solving. There are frequent and longer battles with enemies and a greater emphasis on tactical game play.

Roleplay Heavy

“Roleplay Heavy” games place the focus on the story, the characters, and the world they live within, and tend to lean hard into the various roleplaying elements of the game. These games will frequently find the party talking with NPCs, exploring the personal elements of their backstories, or even having emotional moments around the camp fire.

What I provide

What I Provide My Players I bring your story to life with dynamic scene handouts, curated ambient soundtracks, and distinct NPC character voices—from the hushed whisper of a subway phantom to the booming benediction of a basilica priest. Every map on D&D Beyond is annotated with hidden runes and tactical cues, so your battlegrounds feel as alive as the city streets they mirror. Combat is intense and tactical, but I’m a staunch believer in the Rule of Cool: if you describe a clever move, I’ll bend the rules to let you shine. Expect cinematic flair—flashing spell effects, slow-motion criticals, and spotlight moments that celebrate your creativity as much as your hit rolls. Beyond the game itself, I share: Session Recaps & Debriefs: Quick “lessons learned” in Discord so we all carry forward the best moments (and laugh at the glorious failures). 1:1 Follow-Ups: Optional character workshops or lore deep-dives to ensure your concept evolves alongside the plot. Resource Pins & Templates: Gear lists, reference guides, and our “Arcane Assembly Primer” to keep everyone on the same page. My style blends structured storytelling (thanks to my L&D background) with improvisational magic—we’ll hit the beats that matter, but the twists and turns are shaped by your curiosity and bold ideas. Pull up a virtual chair; I’ve got the music cued, the voices warmed up, and the hidden world waiting for you.

Gameplay details

I believe the best adventures are built on trust—so before we even roll initiative, I’ll share a Lines & Veils document that outlines content boundaries (“lines”) and passage limits (“veils”). You’ll have time to suggest edits or add items privately via a simple Discord form, so everyone’s comfort zones shape the game world itself. Session 0: Building Our Covenant In our kickoff, we’ll cover: X-Cards, N-Cards & O-Cards: Digital versions you can invoke with Discord reactions (❌ for X-Card, 🚫 for N-Card, 🌟 for O-Card) or by DM—no explanation needed, play halts or shifts immediately. Safety Tools Overview: How to use Lines & Veils, what counts as “off-limits,” and where to flag discomfort in voice or text. Social Contract: We’ll agree on respect, confidentiality (“what happens in Veilbreak, stays in Veilbreak”), and how we communicate OOC concerns without derailing the flow. Ongoing Care & Aftercare After each session, I’ll post a brief “check-in” poll in #☕┆afterglow so you can share anonymous feedback or request a one-on-one debrief. If any scene cooked up more heat than comfort, we’ll schedule a quick DM or voice chat to ensure everyone’s feeling good before our next dive into the Veil. By weaving open communication and flexible consent tools into every step—digital documents, simple emoji cues, and after-session check-ins—we make sure Veilbreak remains a safe crucible for bold ideas, wild theories, and unforgettable moments.

How will character creation work

🛠️ When & Where We kick off with a Personalized Session Zero or a group meetup to align expectations, tease your hooks, and finalize logistics. 🎲 Stats & Level Starting Level 3: You arrive battle-tested, not baby-faced. Rolled Sets: On D&D Beyond, roll three arrays of 4d6 → drop the lowest die, then pick your favorite. HP: Take the maximum hit points for your class at Level 3—no “oops, I rolled a 1” regrets here. 🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Race & Theme Humans Only: Choose any official human variant (Standard, Variant, or human lineage from PHB, XGtE, TCoE). Starting Gear: Standard Level 3 kit—no early legendary loot here; magical treasures await on your journey and you will get some helpful items early on. 💼 Class & Career Synergy Design a character whose adventuring class and everyday job naturally feed each other. Example: A Rogue / Private Investigator who uses sleight-of-hand to lift clues and an eye for detail to spot hidden runes. Example: A Cleric / Social Worker whose healing magic mirrors their day-job empathy, counseling survivors of otherworldly horrors. Example: A Fighter / Firefighter who dashes into burning buildings by day and dives into infernal threats by night. 📚 Reference Library ✅ Allowed: Player’s Handbook, Xanathar’s Guide, Tasha’s Cauldron
