Divine Intervention: Icewind Dale [5e 2024]

Divine Intervention: Icewind Dale [5e 2024]

Dungeons & Dragons 5e | Campaign

About the adventure

Every day gets colder as Auril's everlasting rime grips tighter, clinging to the 10 Towns. Feel the cold touch of death in the frigid north of Icewind Dale. Rime of the Frostmaiden is a DnD adventure that focuses on the hard living conditions of the frozen north, and the horror of what might be lurking just inside coming storm. Media with similar vibes include: -The Thing -The Day Before Tomorrow -30 Days of Night -The Revenant We will be using the new 2024 rules!

Game style

Rules as Written (RaW)

Games that are ran “Rules as Written” emphasize realism and stick to the letter of the rules, allowing players to explore creative solutions while still operating under a consistent rule set. Players have the ability to utilize the rules in creative ways to create awesome characters and moments in the game.

Rule of Cool (RoC)

“Rule of Cool” emphasizes creative story beats over sticking to a system’s rules as written. Players have the ability to push the limits of the rules or even break core rule mechanics at times if the Game Master thinks it is interesting, fun, or cool enough.

Roleplay Heavy

“Roleplay Heavy” games place the focus on the story, the characters, and the world they live within, and tend to lean hard into the various roleplaying elements of the game. These games will frequently find the party talking with NPCs, exploring the personal elements of their backstories, or even having emotional moments around the camp fire.

Combat Heavy

“Combat Heavy” games emphasize the combat mechanics within their systems over roleplay or puzzle solving. There are frequent and longer battles with enemies and a greater emphasis on tactical game play.

Recruiting notes

For years, Auril, a merciless deity of cold and winter, has cast an everlasting shadow over Icewind Dale, plunging what is already a frozen wasteland into an even deeper freeze. You all find yourselves in Ten Towns, each reason is your own, but things quickly become clear that the people of Icewind Dale need help. Will you step up to the challenge? We will be playing the 2024 rules of DnD, with a few exclusions: 1. No species traits that grant a fly speed, like the Aasimar's Heavenly Wings ability. 2. Player characters won't have natural/species related Darkvision. If you choose a species that comes with Darkvision, you can instead choose a Feat to replace it! 3. No Silvery Barbs. Icewind Dale is meant to be an epic story filled with fear, and sometimes be downright terrifying. Having ran Icewind Dale previously, natural darkvision and fly speeds tend to mitigate the mood that Icewind Dale tries to set. If that's not your thing, that's ok! But if you want a horror DnD campaign, let's make it scary!

How to prepare

A mic will be necessary, but camera's are fully optional! All you will need is a discord account and good internet access! Desktop computers are preferred, but tablets will also work!

What I provide

I'll be trying to make this as immersive as possible! - Maps - Tokens - Ambient Music - Accents/voices - Implementing backstories and character plots I tend to stick as close to the rules as I can, but my primary concern is having a good time. If any of the rules are getting in the way of that, we will discuss together in the moment how to make the rules work better for us.

Gameplay details

Session 0 - The first session will cover character creation and general housekeeping things before beginning the campaign! Luxton Technique - Session 0 will include a brief discussion of triggers and topic/subject matter that are off limits. This is a time for players to bring up any content that they'd like to avoid, no questions asked. If there's a potential trigger that might be too prevalent within the story, this will be the time to discuss! X - I like to handle X cards two different ways; digital and physical. Players are welcome to choose between the two whichever works best for them. Have a note card or piece of paper with an X drawn on it, then whenever you need, just hold that up to your camera. Alternatively, I like to keep an eye on the chat so if a physical card isn't your thing, or you prefer to stay off camera, just type "X" into the chat, and we can pause gameplay to work through the situation. Open Door and Breaks - At any point during the game, please feel free to momentarily step away from the game to de-stress, grab a drink/snack, use the restroom, or just stretch! On that same note, if something has come up in the game that might not be X worthy, but still feels like it warrants discussion, we can pause gameplay at any point to talk. Debriefing and Stars And Wishes - At the end of each session I like to hold a few minutes to discuss what went well and what could be better! Stars and Wishes are great for this, and debriefing fills in the gaps that Stars and Wishes might not cover. If you'd like, I can also create an anonymous survey to fill out to leave feedback about sessions going forward! The game is only good if we are ALL having fun, so if even one person feels like they want to talk about something, let's take care of it as soon as possible.
