About the adventure

NOTE ON PRIVACY: IF YOU WANT A PRIVATE 1-ON-1 VERSION OF THIS SESSION, JUST DIRECT MESSAGE THE DM AND I'LL BE HAPPY TO SET UP A SESSION JUST FOR YOU! Do you want to try your hand at being a DM, but you're unsure how to turn your ideas and vision into an adventure you can run for your players? Or are you already a DM, but you've run into "DM's block", and the ideas won't flow or you are having trouble turning your ideas into playable D&D content? Do you have a great idea for a new adventure but you struggle to bring it to life? Perhaps you're preparing to run an existing adventure module or book and find that you only love part of the story or some of the ideas while other parts don't work for you at all, and you don't want to run those disappointing bits "as written" ... but you're not sure what to do to "fix" the parts that are broken. I offer these "Tapping Your DM Creativity and Getting Past DM's Block!" sessions to help you overcome any of these problems by showing you step-by-step how to tap into your creative energy, get fun ideas flowing, organize your materials, and experience the joy of creating D&D sessions your players will love. In the first half of this three-hour session, I will share with you and explain a list of ideas that have helped me transform creative challenges or moments of DM's Block into fun excursions into creativity, transforming "stuck or broken" scenes or ideas into adventures I couldn't wait to run with my players. In the second half, we'll apply these ideas to one or more stuck or broken adventures or notions (we can use yours or I can provide my own) and work through them until they feel as fun to run as you hoped they would when your inspiration to write or run an adventure first arose. Overcoming DM's block isn't magic and it definitely is something you can learn (if you want to). Pushing through a drought of ideas or righting what's wrong with a scene or a module is a matter of understanding where you want to end up, where you are now, and applying a few tried-and-tested creative exercises that help you engage your own creativity to transform what wasn't working for you into what brings you and your players joy. If you'd like to have someone under 18 attend this session, just have a parent contact me with a direct message confirming that you will be attending the session with your younger participant. All material covered will be age-appropriate. NOTE - if you'd rather see this session offered on a different day or at a different time, just let me know and I'll be happy to schedule a session that works for your schedule!

About me

Greetings Adventurers and fellow DMs! I'm your friendly GM/DM Justin Donie, known here as Fungeon Master Justin. I specialize in D&D5e games for parties ranging in size from 1 to 12 people (1-6 online, 1-12 in person), with ideal party sizes ranging from 3 to 5 players, comfortably managing an eight-person campaign at the moment. I've run over 700 D&D/RPG sessions in my 40+ years of playing (590+ of those in D&D 5e in the last 10 years), including a good mix of in-person and remote sessions of D&D (AD&D, 2e, 3e, 5e), Star Trek, Star Wars, Shadow Run, and other RPGs, but my focus is definitely D&D. I was fortunate to spend over 10 years working at Wizards of the Coast, and while I was there I got the chance to write the D&D Adventurers League module 09-03 Hungry Shadows (https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Hungry_Shadows) and to be a contributing writer to Baldur's Gate: Descent into Avernus. I offer a range of session type and length options including One-Shots (2-3 and 4-5 hours), Marathon One-Shots (5-6 and 7-8 hours) and Campaigns with serial 1-2 hour or 3-4 hour episodes. In addition to the One-Shots and Campaigns I currently offer, feel free to message me about doing a Custom One-Shot for you and your party! I enjoy running both published content and my own homebrew one-shots and campaigns. I am available for both private individual/group events as well as public events, and if you'd like me to run something you've written, I'm open to discussing that too! Please see my GM Style notes for more information about me and what I do! PARTY COMPOSITION: Recognizing that you might be contacting me as an individual looking to play in a game OR as one person representing a group of people who want to play together, please mention in your contact whether you are looking only for 1 slot for yourself or if you have friends who are planning to join the same scheduled event. I normally only run Neutral and Good characters, but I will run Evil's IF the group playing the Adventure agrees to it and we discuss play style well before game time. So if you want to play an evil character, please contact me before booking. SPECIAL REQUESTS: It's always OK to ask me about shifting dates, times, player counts, etc. to better suit your purposes. If I can make it work from my end, I'll be happy to do so!

This GM sets the mood beautifully, and does a great job of preparing the scenario and having maps, pictures, and combat grids ready to go. He’s very experienced and adaptable, and was able to quickly accommodate the story-line to the decisions we had made while keeping us on the path toward the conclusion. Also, we were all having so much fun that the story was going long, and he was willing to extend the playtime well past the scheduled end time so we could reach a solid conclusion. Highly recommended!

Super chill, fun and knowledgeable. I've played with a few different DMs through this service so far and had a great experience with a one-shot with Justin. New favourite!

Very good and lots of fun! It was my very first Dungeon Crawl and Justin made it easy to understand and smooth to plug in. There was plenty of action (which I really like) and interaction with my party members was fantastic. Justin really made the adventure run smoothly and kept it going. Would definitely recommend, not only for starters but also for experienced adventurers if you love the action!

Dungeon Master Justin was truly FUN. He led our group of 5 new players on their first session of DnD and was a great teacher who made sure there was enough time to answer ALL our questions. Justin expertly guided our crazy ragtag group when things got off track. His storytelling was fantastic and he really nailed the timing and twists. We had a blast and will be turning our one shot into more fun with our DM ☺️

Justin is a great GM who clearly has a lot of experience; no matter what the party does, he doesn't miss a beat reacting to it, and strikes that important balance of providing enough direction and keeping the session from meandering (especially important in one-shots), while not making the players feel railroaded. He speaks clearly and has a voice that is nice to listen to while he gives detailed descriptions of the players' surroundings.

A very professional DM. Not only is he keeping the game interesting and running at a perfect paste, but he is also providing a fun and exciting game. Highly recommended!

Character creation
Creating your character

Since this is a how-to creative session, no prepared materials are required, but if participants have one or more specific scenes or ideas or modules they are currently struggling with that they would like to discuss with me and others, having those materials fully ready to share before the session will help save time.

The current party

Whether you're just getting started as a DM or you're an established DM looking for ways to overcome creative blocks, this 2-3 hour session will help you move from "I've got great ideas, but ..." to "I know what to do to bring my ideas to life!" Come join us for a deep dive into what you want, where you are now, where you want to end up, and practical tips and hands-on exercises to unleash your inner DM!

What to expect
Preparing for the session

My sessions normally take place on Zoom (or Discord if Zoom doesn't work for some reason) and require a PC or smartphone, internet access, a microphone and speakers to support audio discussions (though text-only sessions can be arranged in advance if required or preferred), and an account on D&D Beyond (can be a free account). I have used MS Teams extensively (many years), and while I'm not using it now, with a little lead time (let's say at least several days), I'm sure I could provide a smooth MS Teams session. If you live in the Puget Sound area (from about Edmonds down to Olympia), and you'd like to arrange an in-person session with your group, send me a direct message on SPG or Discord. Familiarity with D&D before this session is not required, as I am always delighted to work with people who are entirely new to D&D. The spoken language in these sessions will be English.

What Fungeon Master Justin brings to the table

With over 35 years of experience as a Dungeon Master and 40 years as a D&D player, I have hosted over 600 sessions of D&D and other RPG games. I worked for Wizards of the Coast (makers of D&D) for over 10 years, wrote Adventurer's League module 0901 Hungry Shadows, and was a contributing writer to the D&D book Baldur's Gate: Descent into Avernus. In my sessions (Zoom or Discord, or if you live near Puget Sound we can discuss a face-to-face session), I offer players full access to all required content on D&D Beyond (2014 and 2024 rules welcome), I use the D&D Beyond 2d mapping system with existing and custom player, monster, and item tokens. I have access to all D&D Beyond content, so you can stretch your creativity as a player into all the fun corners D&D has to offer. During gaming sessions, players should feel free to role-play as much or as little as they feel comfortable, though in this "how-to" session, that might not come up. Feel free to ping me on Discord or Start Playing Games if you have any questions! https://discord.gg/3YBfH8PKgz
