Report Adventure

About the adventure

"Seven seals for seven seas, Seven lords, but none for me!" - old pirate saying, source unknown An ancient force threatens the Sword Coast. Eldritch evil has arisen from the murkiest depths of the sea, bound to the service of a primeval hatred. At first, it was merely pirate crews disappearing. Now, entire cities have vanished. The people of the land are scattered and confused, casting about for someone to blame - and their gaze has fallen upon you. You must gather allies and resources to face down this threat. The Pirate Lords speak of the Seven Seals of the Seven Seas - long-lost, legendary items which grant power and status to the ships and sailors which bear them. Find these seals, and your crew could lead a fleet the likes of which has never been seen. Fail, and everything you have built will be torn apart, plank by plank, until nothing is left but the whispers of the crashing waves. This is a perfect time to sign up - we are just about to begin the epic main arc of the campaign! The crew is on the verge of setting off from their safe harbor in search of the first of seven seals. Characters are at Level 7 and will be joining as the crew of a pirate ship owned and operated by the party. This is a swashbuckling adventure campaign with a quest-driven sandbox structure. It is a custom campaign set in the Forgotten Realms, blending homebrew with deep lore - beginner-friendly, yet rewarding for old salts! I use a mix of custom seafaring rules and third-party supplements, such as Songs of the Spellbound Sea, to run sea travel, exploration, and combat. Third party nautical-themed classes and subclasses are available for players. My games are run on an immersive Foundry setup with voice acting for NPCs. I like to run fast, tactical, and sometimes challenging combats but always with the goal of empowering my players. My table is welcoming to all and is beginner and LGBTQ+ friendly.

About me

Hello! I'm Neal, and I've been playing and running RPGs since high school. I love roleplaying and entertaining, and I've pursued a career in adjacent fields such as theatre and education, but with the rise of online gaming I've decided to take my hobby to the next level. I was born and raised in New York, where I worked in the theatre industry throughout my 20's until I decided it was time for a more radical change in scenery. I moved to the country of Georgia and became a teacher, drawing on my theatre experience to teach subjects such as Design and Drama. After more than a decade teaching, the pandemic showed me that remote work was definitely my jam. I've been running games online for about four years now and I love the experience. I've set up a discord server and a cloud-hosted Foundry VTT installation, which I've tailored to my DMing style using a variety of add-on modules. My games are designed to be approachable and beginner-friendly and to foster meaningful roleplaying experiences in which player characters have an important place in the setting and players have the opportunity to add to the world with creative input.

Character creation

Creating your character

Characters will be created on D&D Beyond. All official options are allowed. 3rd Party/Homebrew options are available but I'll check them to ensure balance and style are consistent. I have the Songs of the Spellbound Sea nautical campaign guide (early access from Kickstarter) and will be allowing the classes and subclasses from that guide as well. If you use a class from that guide we'll create your character using Foundry.

The current party

As of July 1st, characters are at level 8. We will use standard D&D 2024 rules to make characters, plus custom backgrounds and third party options are available. The campaign is expected to go all the way to level 20!

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players need a microphone, a Discord account, and a Dndbeyond account.

What Neal Z brings to the table

Foundry VTT with a full suite of automation and animation modules for an immersive experience. D&D Beyond Master Tier with all official options unlocked and options for 3rd party content. I use character voices and ambient music, provide intense, tactical combat, and encourage player agency.

Homebrew rules

Fast Combat Rules: 1. Act quickly - stay engaged and be ready to act when called on 2. Limit table-talk - Once initiative is rolled, your characters don't have time to debate strategy and tactics anymore 3. Commit to your decisions - once you've done something it usually won't be retconned, unless it was based on an out-of-character misunderstanding. 4. Mob Attack Rule - when rolling multiple identical attacks, I'll combine them into one roll for the sake of speed and threat (mechanically, this is similar to MCDM's minion/group attack roll). Crunchy Crits: critical dice are always maximized - e.g. a crit with a longsword does 1d8+8, rather than 2d8 Healing Potions: Full action, Full heal. You can drink a healing potion as a Bonus Action per standard rules, or drink it as a regular action to get maximum healing. I also have a detailed homebrew Nautical Combat system, which includes sections like siege weapons, targeting vehicles with spells, ranged weapon attacks from ships, etc. I'll give you a link upon signup!
