Curse of Strahd: Shadows of Ravenloft (2014 Rules)

Curse of Strahd: Shadows of Ravenloft (2014 Rules)

Dungeons & Dragons 5e | Campaign

About the adventure

As the mist coils around your feet and the last rays of sunlight fade behind storm-choked skies, you realize there is no escape. Barovia is a prison of despair, ruled by an immortal tyrant who watches from the looming spires of Castle Ravenloft. Here, the dead whisper in the fog, the living cling to false hope, and the line between salvation and damnation blurs with every choice you make. Will you become the heroes who break the cycle, or will you be yet another tale of tragedy in the Devil Strahd’s domain? In this take on Curse of Strahd, you will experience a world that reacts to your decisions, where alliances matter, and where terror lurks in every shadow. Every encounter, from desperate villagers to Strahd’s cunning spies, will challenge you to think beyond the dice. The land itself is cursed, and you’ll feel its weight as you traverse its haunted forests, crumbling villages, and eerie ruins. The campaign is brought to life with stunning interactive battle maps from Beneos Battlemaps and immersive soundscapes that will pull you into Barovia like never before. This game is for players who crave deep roleplay, high-stakes decision-making, and tactical combat that rewards creativity. My style is tough but fair, meaning your choices will shape the world, sometimes in ways you won’t expect. NPCs will remember your actions, consequences will linger, and rewards will be earned, not given. If you’re looking for a gripping gothic horror adventure with meaningful player agency, then step into the mist… and try to survive. Do you have the courage to face the darkness? Or will Barovia claim you as its own?

Expect an immersive experience where every enemy and NPC feels like part of a living, breathing world. Zesty designs combat where enemies act organically, yet still feel balanced. Enemies lay traps, flee, communicate. You win some, you lose some, you shouldn’t fight some. He lets you figure out which is which though. Death never feels far off, and each victory is sweeter for it. Story wise Zesty adapts very well to player choices. We’ve definitely caught him off guard, but he rolls with it and even better, the benefits/consequences of our choices carries through. He makes it clear we possess weight in this campaign and it’s very exciting to see where that takes us. And through it all he runs a lighthearted table, players laugh, have running jokes, just some friends rolling dice and making stories. I’m really enjoying playing his campaign, would definitely recommend him as a DM for a solid DnD experience. Players who enjoy deep, story-driven worlds will thrive. If you appreciate a DM who not only knows the rules but also makes every battle feel purposeful and every NPC feel important, this is the GM for you. Creative players who like to push boundaries will especially love how he accommodates wacky, out-of-the-box ideas.

Zesty puts so much effort into creating a immersive game. His campaigns have everything for background music to combat automations. he puts the work in to create an immersive battle scene but he also allows characters to be themselves and roll goofy off the wall check that line up with each players characters. i have done several online campaigns but his is the only one i look forward to every week. would recommend him 10/10 every single time.

Zesty creates a combination of both immersive role play and combat balance. one minute you may be fighting off a dozen goblins and the next you may be bluffing your way out of a intense combat encounter. On top of the effort he put into maintaining a solid level of balance between combat and RP he also puts crazy levels of attention into his games. prior to playing with him i was used to very manual flat 2d games. His games include combat automation, automatic initialed trackers, background music, ect. If i could rate him about 5 stars i would in a heart beat. The amount of effort he puts into each session shows his dedication as a DM but his overall love for the game from a players perspective.

I really like the laid back and silly environment that Zesty creates with his games and the player group. I can always be free to express a more comical side to characters which isn’t the easiest for me to do. I’ve really enjoyed playing at Zesty’s table for Dragonlance!

Woow!! My first session with this Dm was amazing. I couldn't tell if this was my first or tenth session he made it feel like I had been there all along. I was kind of nervous first time with new group/DM. That did not last but a few minutes, smooth intro and we were on it. Can not wait for the next session.

How to prepare

Players will need a DnD Beyond account, a good working Mic, and access to discord. Some folks like to use a webcam but it is by no means required. Characters should be discussed with the DM prior to your 1st session.

Combat will be intense, deadly, and deeply thematic. • Dynamic Battlegrounds: Fights won’t be static slugfests—expect environmental hazards, lair actions, and enemies that think like real hunters. 🎶 Atmospheric Sound & Visuals • Immersive Soundscapes: Dark ambient music, chilling sound effects, and dynamic audio cues will make Barovia feel alive (or undead...). • Striking Visuals: Carefully curated art, maps, and animated effects will deepen the immersion. 🎲 Balanced Between Rules & Creativity • RAW + Rule of Cool: I respect the Rules as Written (RAW) but reward audacity and creativity. If you come up with a cinematic moment that makes sense in the story, I’m here for it. • Player-Driven Storytelling: You’re not just here to watch a story unfold—you’re here to shape it. Your choices matter, and they will echo throughout the campaign. If you want a gritty, immersive, and rewarding Curse of Strahd experience that feels alive, you’ve come to the right place. Prepare for intense battles, deep roleplay, and a story that will haunt you long after the game ends.

Gameplay details

Creating a safe and enjoyable experience for all players is a priority in my games. Curse of Strahd is a gothic horror campaign with dark themes, so clear communication and boundaries are essential. Here’s how we ensure a fun, respectful, and immersive experience for everyone: 🛡️ Safety Tools in Use Breaks: We will take regular breaks as needed, ensuring everyone is comfortable and engaged. Open Door Policy: If you need to step away for any reason whether it's a personal issue, discomfort, or just needing a break, you can do so without judgment. Your well-being comes first. Session 0: Before we begin the campaign, we will have a Session 0 to set expectations, discuss themes, and establish player comfort levels.

How will character creation work

We are using the 2014 DnD 5e rules. Characters may use any official DnD content (No UA or Extended universe) Characters can be created using point buy or standard array. Campaign will start at level 1. Characters should be created in DnD Beyond and discussed with the GM prior to the player's first session. In Barovia there are some caveats you should be aware of: Resurrection and Revivification Spells like Revivify, Raise Dead, and Resurrection do not function normally in Barovia. The souls of the dead are trapped or consumed by Strahd or the Dark Powers, making it difficult (or impossible) to bring back the dead. Divine Casters & Deities Clerics and paladins may find that their gods cannot reach them in Barovia. Divine spells may not have the intended effect or work at all. Certain gods (like the Morninglord and Mother Night) have some presence, but even their power is diminished. Sunlight-Based Spells As the sun never really shines in Barovia spells like Dawn and Sunbeam do not function. Teleportation & Plane Shifting Spells like Teleport, Plane Shift, or Word of Recall cannot be used in Barovia. The mists block all planar travel unless Strahd or the Dark Powers allow it. Necromancy & Undead Magic Spells like Create Undead or Animate Dead might have unintended side effects, as undeath is already tied to the Dark Powers of Barovia. Restrictions on Flight Strahd controls the skies, and spells like Fly or Wind Walk may draw his attention (or provoke his minions like swarms of bats).
