About Mxlpxl

Hello! I go by Mxlpxl (he/him) online but feel free to call me Andrew. I've been playing TTRPGS since 2012 and primarily have been a Game Master during that time. The games that I’ve been enjoying since then are D&D 5 & 5.5, Daggerheart, and Fabula Ultima.Outside of running TTRPG tables I’m a middle school teacher in NYC.

I got started GMing...

My first GM experience was at Gencon 2013 during the last legs of DND Next ( the Dungeons & Dragons playtest prior to 5th edition.) I ran one hour one shots for eight hours a day on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Talk about trial by fire!

My favorite system of all Time is

Daggerheart. I know the game is not even two years old yet but the crit system is so much fun and being able to interject with fear during narrative or combat is amazing. Also the fact that players can see you tracking fear and measure when you might jump in to speak? So good.

When I'm not running games I'm...

Playing video games with my son or scrolling Tiktok. :D

How Mxlpxl runs games

I enjoy many aspects of being a game master and dedicate a lot of my time to the craft. My Youtube history is full of videos on how to prep for sessions, the next best improv tool, new software to use in games, anything and everything to make my table the best table it can be. When designing combat I like to have a map full of obstacles and alternate objectives to win. You'll often hear music, see magic missiles flying across the screen, and big cinematic descriptions. My adversaries are often not played to the way they are designed in the stat block specifically because...I think I can make cooler abilities honestly. I do try to avoid theater of the mind as often as possible. In terms of roleplay when I get the chance to voice characters its a blast. Especially characters with narrative stakes and I do not shy away from emotionally heavy scenes (even though funny silly muppet characters hold a special place in my heart).

If my games were Movies they'd be directed by...

Adam Sandler, Mel Brooks, Taiki Waititi, Ben Stiller, Seth McFarlane, Seth Rogen.

My games focus on...

having laughs, seeing cool in game mechanics, and telling a great story together.

When it comes to voices

I've got an okay range and willing to embarrass myself to pick up more voices. I do tend towards the more Sesame Street/Muppet/Disney route.

Mxlpxl's ideal table

The table is often a combination of collaborative storytelling, contagious laughter, deep introspection, and a sprinkle of horror. If you do not take the game too seriously, if you like to be at a table where people know your name and care about your day, if you believe that everyone deserves to be treated with respect, you'll find a great time at this table. The general vibe at the table is that we are all here to have fun developing our characters, testing the limits and experiencing the consequences, while pushing forward the plot.

I love it when a player

takes charge and leads the party to the next part of the story.

I think it's a red flag when players...

tell other players what to do or how to play without asking if they want advice.

I think metagaming...

isn't very fun. It is far more enjoyable to experience the game through the eyes of your character. Also, I don't use stat blocks from the monster manuals anyway.
