About Mxlpxl

Hello! My name is Mxlpxl. I have been playing tabletop roleplaying games for over 11 years now and have found that I am extremely passionate when it comes to curating these experiences for people. My favorite thing to do is have people interact with a world and have it move and change with their actions while still being able to poke fun at ourselves. My experience in running tabletop roleplaying games are equal parts with adults and it has been for kids. Having to switch gears to a public school teacher in NYC, I've had the amazing opportunity to bring Tabletop Roleplaying games to classrooms across the five boroughs. For many of us, this is a fun way to spend our time being creative and hanging out with our friends. To my enrichment, it has also expanded my toolkit in the classroom to teach skills like reading, writing, arithmetic, socialization, and social emotional learning under the guise of fantasy roleplaying. Academic and social skills which are severely lacking in this fast paced digital world. During the Summer I enjoy running games at conventions, my favorite one being Gencon in Indianapolis and NYComicon at home. Even though these one shots are often short lived, it is so important to me that their first game is a memorable experience. (so many horror stories of bad experiences from people I've met over the years) It is my sincere belief that TTRPGs are a low stakes vehicle to access a healthy part of the human experience. An opportunity to hang out with friends, meet new people, have an even stage to pretend like an adult in a safe space, creatively use tools to solve problems, and just tell an awesome story. Everyone needs these things, and somehow TTRPGs wrap it all up in a single experience.

I got started GMing...

in a home game when D&D 5th edition first came out! I had been playing at my local game store but had a theory that a quieter ambiance lent to less distractions and more fun at the table. Been pretty good so far!

My favorite system of all Time is

maybe Daggerheart if I'm going to be honest...

When I'm not running games I'm...

Either learning a new TTRPG system, watching the new season of Dimension 20, or listening to my favorite podcast Worlds Beyond Number.

How Mxlpxl runs games

I have several priorities as a game master that could possibly be described as my “style”. I like to create a world for my players to live in, describing the systems in place and how they interact with the environment. Whether it be a pantheon of gods, the financial and geological impacts of trade, and hierarchies and abuse. However, I temper my preparation with collaboration from players at the table. I want everyone at the table to have an option to participate in the creation of the world. If you decide your character works at an airport I would ask, “what does the airport look like? Who else works there? What are their names? What do they look like?” I want you to feel like this is our world, a world that we made together. At this point you might be able to tell that options and choice are very important to me. Not everyone has fun the same way, and not everyone wants to build the world and that is 100% fine! Fostering a fun and inclusive gaming environment for all players requires flexibility and safety both physically and emotionally. I make sure to enforce that everyone is made to feel comfortable and respected at the table. I like to build non player characters with voices, character art, relationships with pcs and other npcs, motivations, and if you’re interested in them, recurring throughout the story. I also like to use npcs that players have made. Telling heartwarming tragic immersive relationship stories with a foil are many times the core of why we sit at the table to play.

If my games were Movies they'd be directed by...

Adam Sandler, Mel Brooks, Taiki Waititi, Ben Stiller, Seth McFarlane, Seth Rogen.

My games focus on...

having laughs, seeing cool in game mechanics, and telling a great story together.

When it comes to voices

I've got an okay range and willing to embarrass myself to pick up more voices. I do tend towards the more Sesame Street/Muppet/Disney route.

Mxlpxl's ideal table

My favorite table is one where we do not take ourselves too seriously and are willing to hustle to bend the rules a tad for the sake of the narrative. Players have patience and understanding for each other, willing to help each others out, but always check in not to overstep/backseat game. We are here to tell a story and play a game but also to be people, know about each others week, be a part of a community.
