About Mxlpxl
Hello! I go by Mxlpxl (he/him/they/them) online but my government name is Andrew. I've been playing TTRPGS since 2012 and have been enjoying my time as a Game Master over being a player. The game I have the most experience in is D&D 5th edition but I'm mostly playing other games nowadays like Daggerheart. In the daytime I'm a middle school teacher in the Bronx, NY teaching every subject from English Language Arts to Gym. When I'm not in the classroom or playing TTRPGs i'm running the discord "The Guild of Many Roads" alongside some wonderful moderators hosting ttrpgs and well as video games, helping build campaigns and sessions, sharing art, and so much more. I encourage grace, dignity, and opportunities for growth in the community. Patience is incredibly important to me. I'm also married and a father of one. Ethnically i'm a mix of Bengali on my fathers side and Filippino , Spanish, and Chinese on my mothers side. I have been known to use ttrpgs to explore my cultural roots but I also love my city of New York and use it as a basis for much content. In terms of my neurodivergence I wrestle with autism in my day to day. I'm working on not taking things too seriously and not geting heated about the nerdy things I enjoy. Now you know A LOT, but I'm sure there is more. I would like to know about you too. :D

I got started GMing...
in a home game when D&D 5th edition first came out! I had been playing at my local game store but had a theory that a quieter ambiance lent to less distractions and more fun at the table. Been pretty good so far!
My favorite system of all Time is
maybe Daggerheart if I'm going to be honest...
When I'm not running games I'm...
Either learning a new TTRPG system, watching the new season of Dimension 20, or listening to my favorite podcast Worlds Beyond Number.
How Mxlpxl runs games
My number 1 priority at the table is safety, but I will elaborate in the appropriate space. I love being a game master, but my vision is very specific on what it means to be a game master. I am in the lab constantly concocting the next big story beat and how to orchestrate it to maximum effect. My tables subvert expectations, try new things, and take you the grandest adventure I can muster every session. When it comes to the 3 pillars of TTRPGS, combat, exploration, and roleplay this is what I like to bring to the table. In combat: I do not like theater of the mind. Period. If it happens that is fine, but when it comes to presentation I want a battle map with line of sight, shadows, surprises, special sound effects, animated graphics, and music. My combats vary depending on what the narrative calls for. Sometimes you want to try out your new moves from that level up, or see what that magic item do, no problem. Sometimes we need that crunchy combat that comes from tactics and strategy, cooperation with the team to tackle something that is bigger than one person. No matter what, there are going to be obstacles and multiple win conditions. I yearn for glorious battle! Exploration can be handled in so many different ways. My fun is creating a giant map to explore and having you chart out your voyage. When will you need to replenish supplies? With the obstacles in the way how will contribute to the challenge? Is there a specific point you want to veer off on for a side quest to get special resources for a project? Are you in charge of other parties that can accomplish goals simultaneously? How do you rally other forces to your cause? Do they set up an outpost? What are the enemies movements and how do you scout their objectives? Will it meet the time constraints? What are the consequences? Exploration gets underplayed so often and its a huge mistake! If you're a Real Time Strategy player like Command & Conquer, Age of Empires/Mythology, Advanced Wars, this gameplay feeds that wolf inside you. Roleplaying characters are a blast for me. Aside from the art and the backstories I do love making character voices for each significant NPC. Being silly, funny, and occasionally charming comes easy to me. Playing tragic characters and creating that sadness at the table is an honest devastation and humanity that I am proud to illicit when possible. When it comes to playing villains, I'm not a fan. However, so many of us have been on the receiving end of evil and know how to characterize poison, betrayal, lies, and abuse just fine. Be prepared to hate me/my villains (but take mercy its just an act for the plot!)

If my games were Movies they'd be directed by...
Adam Sandler, Mel Brooks, Taiki Waititi, Ben Stiller, Seth McFarlane, Seth Rogen.
My games focus on...
having laughs, seeing cool in game mechanics, and telling a great story together.
When it comes to voices
I've got an okay range and willing to embarrass myself to pick up more voices. I do tend towards the more Sesame Street/Muppet/Disney route.
Mxlpxl's ideal table
If you are a republican, bigot, racist (fantasy racist included), homophobe, sexist, misogynist, xenophobe find a different table, this one isn't for you. I like to treat my tables like a microcosm of the discord the games are hosted in "The Guild of Many Roads". We are a community that get to enjoy great games and great company while everyone feels safe and seen. To that end I do insist on cameras for the games we play. In TTRPGs so much of communication is held in our reactions from body language. It is also a great safety tool to see if people aren't sure how they feel about something that has happened at the table. At the table we are always telling jokes, having fun, working on the mechanics of gameplay on the side (in text chat), and trying to embody our characters when communicating. We like to do check ins before or during the early minutes of each session to catch up with each other. It's a space to make new friends or catch up with old ones. I personally like to create memes off the content in session and post it in the chat. Some like to build out scenes on hero forge when they aren't in the spotlight.
