About Alan García Río

I'm Lan, but most people call me Panda! I'm 33 and I've been playing ttrpgs since I was 12. Most of that time we played D&D with my friends over various editions and eventually I started trying new systems, some years ago I came across Apokalypse World and the PbtA genre of games for which I have fallen totally in love with. So now I have quite a variety of games in my portfolio so to say. I've also been DMing for an Adventurer's League on a TableTop club for a year and I became the lore keeper of the league on Kanka and a moderator of the spaces, so I have some experience mediating conflicts and finding solutions in these public games. On a different note, I hope to find players willing to help me test stuff as I am working on game design as well, so I'm really exited to join a community that could help me learn even more about games and player perspectives.

I became a GM because

I really enjoy telling collaborative stories, I love playing games and I used to love building weird worlds in my head. So all these things pushed me into wanting to DM, for years I couldn't really find my style or really what I liked, until I found the hilarious side of comedy and absurdism.

The three words my players would use to describe me are...

The three most used words to describe the way I direct games have been: Whimsical, Fun/Funny and captivating. Tlaking about the more general TtRPGs. Grim, somber and surprising when talking about horror.

When I'm not running games I'm...

I'm a designer, cartoonist and teacher, so when I'm not running games I mostly have my hands in another project. But I love to mix everything together, I like writing and drawing ttrpg fanzines and stickers. Oh, and when I don't run games, I like playing them too, right now I'm playing Mothership

How Alan García Río runs games

Most people would describe me as whimsical - which I love to be honest. But I also find comedy and the absurd being important to me at the moment of having a good time and having fun with the game. Therefore, I may not be the best GM for people looking for deep politics or high drama in their games, but I do make a good job at listening to my players about things they'd like to see more or changing the tone. On the opposite side I also love horror games, I love to use grim descriptions to convey emotions and in these games I also exploit the absurd but dial the comedy back and use it only if the players engage with it to come down from the stressful or dire situations they characters may be in. I love to play combats in tactical rpgs where the attention of the players can be in more than one thing, some times is not just "I hit the goblin", sometimes is "I hit the rope of the crane with the big stone". So from me you can expect challenging combats when they are due, satisfactory victories or dredd filled defeats.

I love it when a player

Comes both with a solid idea and is open minded about it too. Do you have an idea of the type of story you want to tell? Tell me about it at session zero, let me tell you the kind of stuff i would like to tell with all that, let's find an interesting middle point, and let's build your story together

I think it's a red flag when players...

Don't want to interact with the world around them in any other way the one they prefer. Not everything can be solved with a combat or a conversation. Sometimes, sacrifices must be made, but you can talk about it with others. So come, explore the world and your options.

I think metagaming...

Has a place at tables. You shouldn't act on information your character doesn't have. But at the end of the day, this is a game, you are allowed to think and strategize as players, for some it is the fun of the game, so discuss your turns, but not your secret plots.
