Take heart, dear reader, as the week is almost over. For some, that means a time to rest and recharge. For others, that means time to scream with your friends and roll dice. If you’re in the latter group, you might have interest in this week’s tabletop RPG news. Some biggies hit the social feeds this week: a popular MMO is getting a TTRPG adaptation, D&D Beyond partially lifted the curtain on its virtual tabletop, and Dimension 20 teased its new season.Â
Critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy 14 Leaks Official Tabletop RPG
It looks like Square Enix is about to drop an official TTRPG based on Final Fantasy 14, according to ENWorld. The pre-order page for a Starter Set was caught on the Square Enix online store earlier this week. This page was taken down after six hours, but not before being archived or before a picture of the starter set was shared around online.Â
The archived listing notes that the Starter Set is intending for a May 2024 release, will cost $59.99, come with three premade scenarios that tie into the MMO’s story, have four classes (Warrior, White Mage, Dragoon, Black Mage), and come with 6d20 and 10d6 in a special design.Â
D&D Beyond Reveals Its Own VTT-Style Map Tool
D&D Beyond took the first step towards a public unveiling of its in-house VTT on Tuesday with Maps. Maps is a new tool on the D&D Beyond site, a browser-based space for Dungeon Masters to display maps, move tokens, and add fog of war. The function is in Alpha at the moment, making it very basic in use, and also only available to Master Tier subscribers.Â
This is not the ull 3D VTT teased in previous Dungeons & Dragons virtual events. Instead, this is 2D platform akin to Above VTT or Owlbear Rodeo. The big standout of this version is that you’ll have immediate access to maps from official Sourcebooks and Adventures you own on D&D Beyond. Similarly, official monsters already exist as tokens with their official art. The seamless integration is clearly a selling point for this initiative.Â

Dimension 20 Puts Cute Animals In Dangerous Situations For New Season
Dropout released a trailer for Dimension 20’s new season, Burrow’s End. Aabria Iyengar will GM a story about a family of stoats that must leave their burrow in search of a new home. Strangely, D&D is the system of choice for this tale of natural wonder which will run for 10 episodes. The players are Brennan Lee Mulligan, Isabella Roland, Siobhan Thompson, Erika Ishii, Rashawn Nadine Scott, and Jasper William Cartwright. The series seems to be going for a balance between whimsy and danger, even featuring large battle maps populated by tiny stoat figurines.Â
That brings this week’s TTRPG news to a close! The prospect of D&D Beyond’s new Maps system brings promise, especially in the smart ways it tries to make a GM’s life easier. A Final Fantasy 14 TTRPG intrigues, assuming it offers a proper set of rules for tabletop. And D20 with Aabria is always a treat. Lots of things to look forward to!Â
