The answer to using DnD’s new Bastion system with Virtual Tabletops is here! A new Kickstarter from popular battlemap maker Czepeku will let you build your own home base room-by-room using a browser tool.
If you’ve played with the Dungeons & Dragons 2024 rules, you’ve likely run into Bastions. The idea is solid: players have a home base where they get to choose the rooms and even upgrade them over time. For the DM who isn’t an artist, though, Bastions can pose a challenge. Do you draw a crappy facsimile of their epic fortress? Do you fall back on some map you already own, having to explain why there’s a random bloodstained basement in the Bastion?
Czepeku saw these issues and put forth their skills to a solution, Bastions & Guildhalls: A Modular Map Maker. The idea is simple by design: a browser-based application where users can place predrawn rooms together to make a unique layout. It’s meant to be easy to use, but still allow for quality visuals as it uses hand-drawn Czepeku art.

At launch, Czepeku aims to provide over 300 rooms and assets to use. They’ll also throw in backgrounds based on several environments such as desert, seaside, and forest. Users will also be able to upload their own backgrounds. After that, the browser tool empowers you to rotate/flip rooms, add doors, change the floor type, and even adjust lighting. All of this will be available at launch to backers even if they aren’t subscribers to Czepeku’s regular offerings.
The Kickstarter campaign will run until November 20. It’s already funded, but still worth backing now if it seems like something you’d use. Backing at all but the lowest tier guarantees you lifetime access to the Bastions & Guildhall tool. Higher tiers get you access to the Beta version and more Czepeku maps, but all it takes is $41 to have use of this base builder for life. Pretty good deal for a Dungeon Master!
If any of this interests you, there’s a free demo to try before you buy. Here’s to making some memorable Bastions!
