Welcome to this week’s edition of StartPlaying tabletop news! It’s a lot of release dates and announcements this week, which is a nice change of pace from some of the uncertainty we’ve seen lately.

This week, the Cosmere RPG sets a date for books to hit shelves, Wizards of the Coast comments on the inevitability of BG4, and games for all age ranges were announced for this Fall.

There will also be a starter set box with basic rules, dice, pregen characters, maps, tokens, and a beginner-friendly adventure module. The core rules and world guide are set to retail for $59.99, Stonewalkers goes for $49.99, and the starter set will cost $24.99.

Baldur's Gate 4 Is Inevitable, Says WotC

When asked by The Game Business, WotC president John Hight said of Baldur’s Gate 3 “And of course, we’re going to do a successor.” The idea still seems far off, however, with most attention being paid to the upcoming action/adventure DnD video game being developed by God of War and Star Wars Jedi vets at Giant Skull. Hight shared his hopes that this single-player game will bring DnD to “a very broad audience” while still pleasing tabletop fans. Giant Skull boss Stig Asmussen assures fans that the game will still include core DnD elements like party building and player actions having meaningful consequences.

Several New Game Announcements – Warhammer, DIE, Cats

via Game Nerdz

The time around Gen Con is ripe for game announcements (just look at last week’s news roundup). This week kept them coming, so here’s a quick recap:

  • A new Warhammer: Age of Sigmar TTRPG is coming from Cubicle 7. Titled Warhammer Age of Sigmar Soulbound: Champions of Chaos, it puts players in the role of Chaos bringers. According to Wargamer, Champions of Chaos was originally meant to be an expansion of the current Age of Sigmar RPG. It became a spinoff product once the designers realized they wanted to handle party dynamics and Soulfire in a new way. Each player will also have the option to court different Chaos Gods.
  • Image Comics announced a sequel to DIE, the comic series about people who are sucked into a TTRPG world of their own making (kinda like a certain actual play). The sequel is called DIE: Loaded and features the return of creators Kieron Gillen and Stephanie Hans. Included in its pages will be a Quickstart version of the DIE TTRPG with pregen characters, simplified rules, and a multi-session adventure.
  • The kids cartoon Dungeons & Kittens is getting a TTRPG from Edge Studio. Asmodee will publish the Dungeons & Kittens Starter Set with a September 26 retail release date. The game is aimed at younger players as a “learn how to play TTRPGs” product. The set will cost $39.99 and include several adventures, maps, dice, tokens, and a reference sheet.

Looks like a nice collection of new games made with all kinds of players in mind! Sometimes, the news is just good and reminds you that our hobby is full of cool stuff to play. Hope you get to play something neat this weekend, and may your dice be kind.

Sergio Solórzano is the best Dungeon Master in the USA (according to a Wizards of the Coast competition, anyway). He loves minis and terrain but also goes all-in on improv!
