We’re back with another round of StartPlaying tabletop RPG news! This week has been full of stories from all corners of the industry. To start us off, Dungeons & Dragons previewed the future while battling a controversy from last week, Cosmere RPG broke a huge record, Dungeon World returns from limbo, and Final Fantasy 14 sets second wave of pre-orders.

DnD Direct Shows 2025 Books, Sigil, More 3rd Party Support

Wizards of the Coast streamed a DnD Direct video this week to preview what it has in store for 2025. Of most note was the slate of upcoming books for the year. A dragons in dungeons anthology will be the first major release for the 2024 rules, followed by a new starter set and two books centered on the Forgotten Realms. The VTT Project Sigil also got a lengthy section. Finally, Free League joined the list of third party D&D Beyond participants with Lord of the Rings 5E. D&D Beyond Reverses 2024 Rule Change

Last week saw WotC under fire again for its approach to the 2024 DnD rules. In adapting the new Player’s Handbook for D&D Beyond, the company announced that it would be replacing spells and magic items from the 2014 books with their newer counterparts. The internet was outraged, to say the least, with many comparing the action to ripping the books they paid for off their shelves. D&D Beyond responded to the rage by promising to keep all 2014 rules intact, allowing users to pick the rules of their choice when creating characters.

Cosmere RPG Beats Avatar Record

Cosmere RPG is now the most funded TTRPG Kickstarter of all time. The record was previously held by the Avatar: The Last Airbender RPG, which ended its crowdfunding at about $9.5 million. Cosmere went well beyond $10 million and is still climbing with a day left as of this article’s publishing. This amount of enthusiasm was predicted by many, as Stormlight Archive, Mistborn, and other Cosmere novels by Brandon Sanderson also had massively successful Kickstarter campaigns. Dungeon World Second Edition On The Way From New Owners

A report from EN World confirmed that Dungeon World has a new owner. Luke Crane, who designed The Burning Wheel and Mouse Guard Roleplaying Games, purchased Dungeon World from its original creators. Crane revealed this purchase on the Dungeon World+ Discord server and said that he has plans for a new edition. No further details have been given at this time.

Final Fantasy 14 TTRPG Gets Second Printing

Square Enix opened a second round of pre-orders for the Final Fantasy 14 TTRPG. The first printing of the starter set sold out completely, prompting demand for this second wave. The game itself appears to be a 5E-based game with iconic FF jobs and high level caps. Alongside the starter set, those interested can also pre-order the core rulebook and a deluxe set that includes maps, job cards, and a branded dice bag with tray. Both of those are due in February 2025, while the first wave of starter sets should be in players’ hands soon.

That’s it for a very eventful week of news! Thanks for reading, and may your dice be kind.
