So, you are looking for the best Virtual Tabletop ‘VTT’ for Warhammer Fantasy RPG. There are so many VTTTs out there. How can you tell which is the best? Which one will suit your gaming needs and your style of play at an affordable price?
Firstly, let’s look at what type and style of game you want to put on.
Are you looking for a fully immersive VTT that will let you and your players see the maps of the campaign setting, and will add digital character sheets to your screen?
Will the maps also have animated spell effects with sounds and music added to each encounter that you run?
Or are you looking to enhance your storytelling theater of the mind sessions, making it easier for your group to follow scenes you create with additional imagery? To delve into dungeons without having one player, draw the ten-foot-wide, ten-foot-high passages.
You will also need to ask whether your players have the hardware necessary to run some of these VTTTs on the power of their PC or if they are playing on laptops and telephones. This will also affect which VTT you may choose to use.
Once you have decided upon this, let's look at what is available for Warhammer Fantasy RPG.
Let’s take a look at Foundry VTT.
For the fully immersive version, Foundry VTT cannot be beaten. It will offer all you could want with interactive character sheets visible on screen in the VTT as you play, Warhammer Fantasy-specific token packs and, even some of the more famous and well-used modules for Warhammer Fantasy. These are all available as add-ons, so there is no need to find or build your maps. It is all in one place.
But to have this wonderful service from the Foundry and all these fantastic tools will cost you. Rules books will need to be brought from the Foundry website for around $30 and then the module you wish to use costing $15. Thern there is the fee for the use of the VTT platform itself.
It will also depend on which version of Warhammer Fantasy RPG you want to play, the 1st edition up to the 4th edition. Each edition will need the rules to be purchased.
You will also need to have a good knowledge of technical systems and, if you wish to add custom events, you will need at least a basic knowledge of the computer coding language.
But you do get what you pay for with this VTT. If you have the spare cash and time to learn the way the VTT works, then you and your players will be very happy with it.
Roll20
That said, a slightly cheaper option with fewer whistles and bells is Roll20.
You will still need to buy the rule books and modules from them and customize the other parts you wish to add but with less coding and the use of machine coding.
Roll20 does allow you to have digital character sheets all in one place and supports Warhammer Fantasy RPG, so there is still no need to find too many of the more well-used modules, maps, tokens, but again you will need to pay for these at similar costs to Foundry VTT.
If you are more into adding to your gaming experience with images and maps, then something like Quest Portal or Owlbear Rodeo is a good option and worth a look.
Quest Portal
Quest Portal is a basic VTT that does have a Warhammer Fantasy RPG Digital character sheet option; it has a free-to-join option and then a pro pay option for more additions to the game for a $72 yearly fee.
But you will need to source your own maps and custom tokens to add to your game.
Owlbear Rodeo
Owlbear Rodeo is another very easy-to-use VTT with the GM simply adding maps and tokens using drag and drop from their PC.
It can be used free of charge up to a certain level of storage and then a charge for more storage is the pro upgrade.
You can use their free extensions to add extra fog of war and lighting and token statistics.
Also, their purpose-built Kenku music bot, which can be added to your Discord server, will play music as your players move around your maps.
There is no support or affiliation with any specific game systems with Owlbear Rodeo, so you will need your players to use digital character sheets you have found or created or use paper ones uploaded as Pdfs to your game space, such as Discord.
You will need to search for your own maps and music as well as tokens if you want more than the generic ones offered on either of these two VTTTs.
There are other VTTTs out there, but none that specifically support the Warhammer Fantasy RPG system; the ones listed here are well-used and have a great fan-based support system that will help you as a new user.
Jump on in and give one a try. Most have a free demo service to try out first.
Alternatively, why not join a game on StartPlaying.games and try out some of the different VTTTs used by their excellent pro GMs for Warhammer Fantasy RPG.
Bo is a professional GM running games on StartPlaying.games with over 40 years experience in the fantasy realms of Tabletop role-playing games and he uses VTTTs daily to run his games digitally online.
