When there's something strange in the neighborhood, and there’s rumors of ghosts on the old Miller farm, and the vamps are at it again, who you gonna call? The answer is a ragtag team of hunters ready to battle the forces of evil and probably get into way more trouble than they bargained for. This Powered by the Apocalypse-based system is Monster of the Week (MotW), a Ghosty, Buffy, Scooby Mulder-n-Skully-esque game all about solving mysteries and kicking supernatural butt. But first, you need to assemble your hunting team. Here are the four best places to track down your monster-hunting crew.

1. StartPlaying

When tracking down clues to find your fellow hunters, the best option out there is StartPlaying. It was designed specifically to connect players with experienced GMs, which in MotW are called Keepers. The robust verification and review system ensures you're joining a game run by someone who understands the balance between fun and unspeakable eldritch horrors of the mind. Find a table through the search filter for Monster of the Week games, displaying available seats, scheduling information, session frequency, and associated costs. StartPlaying goes above and beyond for game seekers, which is what earned them the top slot in this list.

2. Discord

There’s an excellent discord called The Unofficial Monster of the Week Server. With over 500 members and a server category specifically for Looking For Group (LFG) posts, this is a great choice. They also offer the option to get a ping notification whenever a new paid game is posted looking for new players, which will often involve a game facilitated through the aforementioned StartPlaying. As such, this is a great spot to not only to find games, but to augment the search via StartPlaying and to get to know the community as a whole.

3. Reddit

Much like figuring out which villager is the werewolf, finding a good MotW group on reddit requires some investigation. While there is a subreddit at r/monsteroftheweek/, it’s not geared toward LFG posts. You’ll have better luck using the search function on r/lfg, which will produce a few results per month. The r/LFG subreddit also allows you to search by tag for whether the game is online or offline, which posts are specifically looking for players, etc. Despite a subreddit with over 40,000 members, Monster of the Week is not a particularly reddit-focused community. You may want to try your luck elsewhere.

4. Facebook

While it’s not specifically for Monster of the Week, you can try the RPG Connection (LFG Only) Facebook group, which will see a few MotW posts every once in a while. You can also try any gaming-oriented Facebook group that’s local to you, including something like a game store or bar with a gaming room. While you won’t find many active FB groups for MotW (there’s one for the podcast and an unofficial group that hardly sees posts anymore), checking your local Facebook groups may still lead you down the trail of breadcrumbs that finds a great table for IRL games, which sets it apart from other mostly online options on this list.

While some may try searching other old school forums, when it comes to finding a group, you won't find much for Monster of the Week. This is because MotW will usually focus on lore and campaigns. There are general LFG forums on Virtual Tabletops (VTTs) like Roll20 for free or paid games, but these only marginally include MotW. You’ll likely have better luck elsewhere.

Happy Hunting!

From the fog-shrouded streets of abandoned towns to the flickering fluorescent lights of mysterious research facilities, Monster of the Week offers a unique blend of investigation, action, and horror that's captured the imagination of tabletop gamers everywhere. While there are several paths to discovering your ideal monster-hunting crew, StartPlaying offers the most reliable experience with vetted Keepers and a streamlined interface. After all, when you're preparing to face down werewolves, vampires, and things that go bump in the night, the last thing you need is uncertainty about your gaming group. You'll be unmasking Old Man Miller in no time.
