About the adventure

Enter a play-by-post campaign not for the faint of heart. In the cursed land of Barovia, you’ll encounter horrors best left unimagined — facing beast, man, and the nightmares that lurk in between. All the while, your journey is shadowed by the ever-watchful gaze of Strahd von Zarovich — the land’s most ancient and malevolent evil. This text-based campaign takes characters from level 1 through to 10, unfolding entirely on Discord with no scheduled sessions. We’ll be using a mobile-friendly virtual tabletop for key encounters, offering visual aids when they enhance the story. Rich, immersive, and tailored for those who love dark fantasy and deep character storytelling — this is gothic horror at its most intense.

About me

I have a real passion for storytelling and role-play games. The idea of creating whole new worlds, even within pre-existing ones through unique storytelling excites me, and is what I lean heavily on within my games. Even when running pre-written adventures I will put my own unique spin on the story with the main focus being on the player characters. When you join one of my games you are not just signing up to be told a story to, but to tell a story together, and add your own unique stamp on the worlds I can take you to, and that we will shape together. Character creation

Creating your character

You may use any official materials, but please ensure your character is compatible with the 2024 ruleset. Homebrew is permitted but must be reviewed and approved by me. If you need any help with character creation, I’m happy to talk you through the process.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need a Discord, Owlbear rodeo and D&D Beyond account to play, as well as access to a smartphone, tablet, or computer. A basic understanding of the rules is helpful but not required — I’m very experienced in teaching D&D and its systems.

What Dan of the dice brings to the table

As your DM, I provide a welcoming, inclusive space on my dedicated Discord server where you and your party can co-create an unforgettable story. I use the rules as a solid foundation—but I’ll always prioritise fun, storytelling, and player agency over rigid mechanics. If a rule gets in the way of a great moment, we’ll bend it to keep the magic alive.

Homebrew rules

As this is a play-by-post game, combat will work a little differently. When combat begins, everyone rolls initiative as usual. The results will determine the turn order, with all players acting first, followed by the enemies. Players can take their turns in any order, at any time before the enemy turn—no need to wait for your specific slot. Once all players have taken their actions, the round will be narrated in initiative order to reflect what happened. The enemies will then take their turn, also narrated, and control will return to the players for the next round. This system keeps combat flowing smoothly and avoids delays caused by waiting on individual turns.

Safety

How Dan of the dice creates a safe table

Before play begins, we’ll have a written session zero where we’ll discuss player safety, boundaries, and potential triggers. All players will be asked to complete an anonymous Google Form where you can list your lines (hard limits) and veils (soft limits) in a safe and private way. During gameplay, you’ll also have the option to flag any content that makes you feel uncomfortable—anonymously. We’ll either adjust or remove that content, ensuring the game stays safe and enjoyable for everyone.
