DM Kayden runs an immersive game with vivid descriptions to create a compelling story, while also encouraging player agency with choices that matter. I’ve played in hundreds of online D&D 5e sessions, and this was the most enjoyable game I’ve had in years. Highly recommended!
This is a well thought out game system I would recommend to anyone who enjoys anime, TTRPGs, and JRPGs. Fabula Ultima combines the signature aspects of each type of entertainment into a unified collaborative experience that I find refreshingly different from the most popular traditional TTRPGs such as D&D and Pathfinder. One of the best aspects of Fabula is the way character identities are created. By combining different classes, there are hundreds of different possible combinations of character identities, which makes it easy to be at least somewhat unique without overlapping other player characters, as often happens in D&D with a comparatively limited class selection. Fabula is also unique in that the characters direct much of the story, including world creation and deciding when their characters die; the game becomes more about building relationships, gaining knowledge/experience, and creating a story, rather than primarily trying to survive and slay monsters. A couple possible downsides to Fabula are the combat and virtual table top access. For anyone who enjoys positional strategic combat, this is not really an aspect of the game. Combat tactics are based on abilities rather than relative location among combatants, meaning it's theater of the mind instead of maneuvering tokens around a map. One other limitation is that since Fabula is relatively new, it only seems to be supported by Foundry VTT so far. There may be other VTTs that could work with Fabula characters, but so far GMs only seem to use Foundry. For anyone coming from D&D or Pathfinder who also enjoys anime and/or JRPGs, I highly recommend trying this game. The core rulebook is only about $25, and the rules are easy enough to follow; you could create a character and get up to speed for a game within a couple hours.
Don’t be fooled by all the five star reviews. Stoofer has transcended the mundane GM review system and lives beyond five stars in the astral plane with his feline assistant. His humble description on Startplaying does not even begin to describe the magical RPG journey of wonder and delight upon which you will embark in his worlds (with the utmost mutual respect and observance of all applicable policies and regulations). Don’t live a life of regret and what could have been. Join a game with Stoofer!
