I got started GMing...

back in high school (2003ish), after a long campaign run by a good friend of my Kevin, who sadly passed in 2009. He taught me a lot about how to Gamemaster effectively, involve all of the players, and tell a great story.

People are always surprised when I tell them

that my other job is in Vehicular Forensics (crash reconstruction)! It's a highly technical scientific field of study that combines physics, trigonometry, and investigative techniques to determine the specific cause of a motor vehicle collision.

When I'm not running games I'm...

creating horrific and homebrewed original content for my fellow Gamemasters!

How Jon Boynton runs games

While my playstyle isn't wholly original, I uphold the following principles: TTRPGs belong to ๐˜ฆ๐˜ท๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜บ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ, as everyone has a story to tell. You will be expected - at all times - to treat others how ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š๐™ฎ want to be treated, and respect each person at the table with the utmost dignity and stoicism. Though the core rules still apply, the "Rule of Cool" will always prevail. If you intend to argue every ruling, this table isn't for you. Combat and roleplay are both integral to the TTRPG experience, with neither superseding the other. You can expect combat to be tough but fair, and roleplay to be rich and immersive. Non-combat solutions to problems in-game are always an option! As Gamemaster, it's up to me to help guide you through your experience. Whether you're a first-timer or seasoned veteran, we're bound to make mistakes - that's okay! We correct course and move on constructively. I deal with rules issues by...

researching the rule and applying its wording logically and fairly.

If my games were Movies they'd be directed by...

Guillermo Del Toro

My games focus on...

suspenseful and layered storytelling, player character inclusion/influence, and multiple solutions to gameplay dilemmas.

Jon Boynton's ideal table

I always enjoy a light bit of banter in-between roleplay scenes, maybe correlating jokes or RP moments with relatable, real-life scenarios or tropes. When the game is played, however, I like when players can get seriousโ€”joke characters have been done before, and though some are applicable in certain scenarios or as comic relief in tense situations, they can sometimes mar the theme you're striving for as a Gamemaster (or player).

Featured Prompts

I love it when a player

Truly utilizes their backstories and any potential advantages they may gain from doing so.

I think metagaming...

is cheating. Try to be aware of what you know and what your character knowsโ€”separately.

My table is not the place for...

Rule Jockeys. We aim to have fun at my tableโ€”not be bound by strict rules.
