My favorite books are

in the genres of political economy and critical theory, but in fiction I love books like Bolaño's "By Night In Chile," Mohamed Mbougar Sarr's "The Most Secret Memory of Men," and Le Guin's "The Dispossessed."

My favorite system of all Time is

probably Ten Candles. Unfortunately, it really only works in person!

When I'm not running games I'm...

teaching, writing, riding bikes with my kid, at the beach, or playing dance pop songs on the drums.

How Dr. Nah runs games

Vibe takes priority: if players are collaborating and riffing off of each other and the NPCs, things are going well! I like games with narrative and tonal depth, games with a dash of pulp heroics, and that careful balance of gravity and levity. Horror scenarios need humor in the right moments; swashbuckling capers need a bit of humdrum daily life now and then. I love the challenge of a crunchy, tactical battle that gets the brain cooking, but once in a while the rule of cool has to take over. Even in a tragic horror adventure, everyone should get a chance to feel like a hero. In play-by-post, I most appreciate writing that has been given a little love and care. Legible syntax and sensible punctuation make all the difference. Style, wit, and juicy internal monologue are very much welcome. I use no AI for writing or game prep, and I would appreciate it if you did the same. I'd much prefer to read posts with typos and "errors" that have heart and human strangeness than posts of flavorless, plastic text extrusion.

If my games were Movies they'd be directed by...

William Friedkin or Howard Hawks.

My favorite trope is...

the crew of scrappy, desperate, morally compromised underdogs willing to sacrifice it all to make the world a little better.

Rules are...

cool and good, and help everybody have fun. And occasionally need to be ignored.

Dr. Nah's ideal table

Slow simmering character mystery, blistering party banter, heady introspection, daring combats and set pieces, crushing tragedy, blunders and mistakes, perfectly timed jokes, and victory against all odds. All I ask is that you want to have some fun, collaborate, and treat everyone else (and the effort they put into the game) with dignity and respect.

Featured Prompts

I think it's a red flag when players...

use 'that's what my character would do' as an excuse to justify antisocial and passive aggressive behavior.

I think metagaming...

on purpose spoils everyone's good time. Accidents happen! But if you know something about the story the characters don't, it really isn't that tough to keep that knowledge from affecting your play.

My table is not the place for...

bullies, bigots, lone wolf edgelords, lone wolf memelords, lone wolves really of any type, player-vs-player stuff, ERP, people who think labor shouldn't be compensated, callousness, pettiness...
