About Avery
Hi there! My name is Avery and I've been GMing various tabletop roleplaying games for going on a decade now, and have experience with numerous systems, including: -D&D 5th Edition -D&D 3.5 -Pathfinder 1st Edition/2nd Edition -Lancer -Call of Cthulu -Many, many various indie TTRPGs When GMing, I try to tailor the experience to the table and my players specifically, getting a feel for whether they are more interested in the roleplaying aspects, gameplay aspects, or some happy medium between them - I also tend to have a flare for the dramatic, and love to keep my players guessing.

I became a GM because
I love the hobby and this is the most engaging way to interact with it, at least for me. I love crafting a great story and making memories at the table, as well as sharing the hobby with as many as possible.
I got started GMing...
Same way everyone does, when you know the most about the game you want to play with your friend group, you tend to be the one that has to teach and sell everyone on it - which meant I was destined to be the forever GM.
When I'm not running games I'm...
Writing next session, or playing some games or reading something for inspiration! May also be bird watching. I'm fond of birds.
How Avery runs games
Personally, I really love the gameplay aspect of most TTRPGS, that is to say I absolutely love rolling dice and the more strategic minded combats. However, in recent years I've recognized the potential for these games to be a sort of storytelling medium, like a dramatic, character focused stageplay, and have leaned into that more narrative style as well. Regardless, I always tailor the experience to my players. If you want a more hardcore, crunchy dungeoncrawl experience, I can make that happen. If you want a heartfelt, sincere roleplaying experience, I can work that in as well. I always want my players to get the most out of their time at the table, and even if my group is a mix of both these player types, I can always dedicate time to making everyone feel seen.

I deal with rules issues by...
Whatever makes the most sense, while also keeping in the heart of fun and engagement!
I prep by
For more combat heavy systems I usually do a test run or a few practice combats to make sure nothing is unbalanced or unfair, and with more narrative elements I typically write out a few essential notes and such to keep things immersive and engaging on that front.
Rules are...
Important, but not non-negotiable! It is often more fun to win and triumph within the boundaries of the rules than it is to try and break them and warp them to a different idea - I can facilitate both, depending on what the game calls for.
Avery's ideal table
Very welcoming of all types of tabletop players, and can rewrite and tailor my campaigns and modules to be inclusive to all. I try to keep things lighthearted, but if the story gets serious or the narrative calls for it, we can get a bit darker depending on everyone's level of engagement. At the end of the day I just want everyone to be involved and engaged.

I love it when a player
Gets heavily involved and engaged in writing their character, backstory and lore. The player characters are always the most interesting aspect of any given table, and even the most generic ideas and concepts can really shine if given the spotlight.
My perfect party mix is
A good mix of roleplayers and strategists, people interested in both the mechanical and narrative, and anyone with enthusiasm for a character concept or an idea they want to try make come to life.
