Terry Pratchett’s Discworld has been steadily garnering new fans since 1983 when the Color of Magic was first published. The books have been adapted into many different iterations: video games, television, a star-studded series of audiobooks, and most recently, Modiphius’ new TTRPG: Terry Pratchett’s Discworld: Adventures in Ankh-Morpork. The kickstarter for the latter had a stated goal of £100,000 and currently stands at nearly 2.5 million. All of this points toward a massive audience for Discworld. But how best to reach them? There are a few places.
1.Startplaying.games
StartPlaying is hands-down the best way to advertise your games. With an incredible social media campaign that includes endorsements and shout-outs from some of the biggest names in TTRPG spaces like Diana of the Rose, Ginny Di, Taylor’s Tavern Tales, the McElroys, and Brennan Lee Mulligan; StartPlaying not only gets your games seen, but seen by people who already understand what StartPlaying is and what they’re signing up for, and who are specifically interested in finding an online table to play at. Its search tools allow thousands of players all over the world to find games of all genres, at every hour of the day, and connect with GMs who are also all over the world. All you have to do is follow the onboarding advice and make a listing for your game that attracts the kind of players you want, and Startplaying will connect you with them. So list yours today!
2. Facebook
There are many active and thriving Discworld fan groups on Facebook and a lot of them allow advertisements and sales of Pratchett-related products. One of the biggest (with daily active posters) that allows Discworld-related promotions is “Terry Pratchett’s Discworld”, with over 12k members. However, when one of the biggest Pratchett Facebook groups shut down, it lead to many splinter groups forming, each with several thousand members and active posters, so searching “Pratchett” or “Discworld” on Facebook will turn up many more, and any of them could bring in a potential player. It’s important to check the rules of each individual group before advertising as not all of them allow self-promotion. Messaging a mod should be easy enough if there’s any uncertainty.
3. Your Local Library / Bookstore
I know I’m not alone in having been introduced to my first Discworld novel* in the musty bookshelves of a second-hand charity bookshop, drawn in by the frenetic cover art of Josh Kirby.** Pratchett fan groups are full of these stories. After that first taste I was in and out of my local library for months with at least one Discworld book each time. A well-placed, well-designed flyer with a QR code in your local Pratchett-dealing emporium or library can get eyes on your game from people who love Discworld but may not yet be in TTRPG spaces, and what better introduction for them to TTRPGs than the rules-light, easy to learn Discworld system?
4. Modiphius Discord Server
The company that makes Terry Pratchett’s Adventures in Ankh-Morpork has their own Discord server, which is a great way to keep up with the latest developments in all of their products. They also have specific channels dedicated to their most popular games like Dune: Adventures in the Imperium, Fallout: The Roleplaying Game and now Terry Pratchett’s Discworld: Adventures in Ankh-Morpork. Each of these has forums where you can advertise or find advertisements for either free-to-play or pay-to-play games. This is a great way to reach people who are not just Discworld fans, but already interested in Modiphius’ Discworld system specifically.
5. Reddit
“The heart of the internet” has a great subreddit that allows for posting games, /rLFG premium (or the even bigger /rLFG for free games, which is in the top 1% of subreddits by size). /rLFG premium has 4.7k members and is in the top 11% of subreddits by number of members so advertising there will definitely get eyes on your game. They also allow for many different TTRPGs so Discworld will be welcome. Be sure to follow the rules on formatting, as they’ll help optimize your post for searchability.
