Bad Things | One-Shot
There are Very Bad Things out there. Some were here long before us, some come from...somewhere else, and some are created BY us. Who can save us? You!
About the adventure
In our Monster of the Week: Bad Things one-shot adventures, your hunter is allied with a loose band of other cryptid seekers, all of whom are just trying to make the world a better, safer place where the regular folk don't get eaten on a regular basis. Unfortunately, that's a harder goal to achieve than one might think.

Meet the Game Master
About me
Hi! In addition to being a professional game master (both here on Start Playing Games and live-and-in-person), I'm a published short story horror author, and host of the horror-and-humor actual-play audio drama, The Gothic Podcast. I started gaming in the Way Back, beginning with the D&D Basic box set that I asked for for Christmas because I liked the dragon on the cover. And though I still love playing and running D&D (and its cousins, Pathfinder 1e & 2e), I have gleefully embraced many other systems, especially Powered by the Apocalypse (PbtA) games such as Monster of the Week. I also loves me some Ten Candles, City of Mist, Alien RPG, and many others. Oh, and Catthulhu! Meow...aaaarrrrrhhhhhhll! To keep up with what I'm offering and other gaming commentary check out my blog at https://www.c-patrick.com

Patrick is an outstanding GM. His storylines are always interesting and he incorporates great imagery in his descriptions. The online resources are top notch, including great art and effects for the battle map. His worldbuilding is deep rich, and he collaborates with players in-game to make sure that the rules are observed in spirit, but that they do not get in the way of the game. He also adjusts well when the party does something unexpected! He builds in great RP opportunities and is ready to help describe the epic moments if words fail a player.
This was my fourth time to join a game on SPG. This time in Dead of Night: Into the Woods, where our group role played character tropes from a horror B-movie. GM C. Patrick's narrative swung the party between high tension and spells of laughter. This game follows my previous visit to SPG, when I learned about the Pathfinder2e game by playing a one-shot, also with GM Patrick. I appreciated that he prepared for that experience by putting some beautiful images in the queue, and each accompanied by thematic music. The session was entertaining and instructive, and a great intro to pathfinder. Our small band of three explorers confidently and humorously almost met our doom. But alas we did prevail by having the right blend of thug, medic, and punk. Thank you GM C. Patrick; I'm looking forward to another.
C. Patrick is such a great GM. His story telling ability sets the stage for glorious adventuring. Whether you are new or advanced he has the ability to make an amazing blend to support all characters. He shows great patience but keeps the storyline moving. Its always a grand fun adventure with his lead and his many character voices and quick wit keep me laughing and frightened all at the same time!
Character creation
Creating your character
Monster of the Week is a role-playing game based on the Powered By the Apocalypse game engine. It is rules-light with easy character creation based on 'playbooks' -- character archetypes. Before the game, you'll be able to go to Roll20 and choose a Playbook (SEE Prep Materials). Make sure you let the rest of us know your choice, though, either here or on the Discord server (SEE prep materials) so that we don't have duplicates. There's also a Quickstart Reference in Handouts in your Roll20 Journals tab.
Come join the Discord (SEE Prep Notes) to see what Playbooks have already been chosen!
What to expect
Preparing for the session
You'll need a computer/phone/tablet/something and a decent mic for connecting to our Discord voice channel. And you'll need to logon to Roll20 before the game (SEE Prep Materials) to choose a Playbook and create a hunter. And that's about all you'll need.
What GM Mr Patrick brings to the table
Our Monster of the Week games are primarily played using Theater of the Mind, with imagery, music, and character sheets (and automated rolling) provided through Roll20. Our Monroe Street Discord server (SEE Prep Materials) is where we'll have pre-game chatter, as well as a voice channel for game-day play.

Safety
How GM Mr Patrick creates a safe table
Lines and veils for our Monster of the Week games include: * Lines (avoid these): Sexual assault and/or harassment; bigotry; racism; animal cruelty * Veils ("fade to black"): Sexual encounters; torture Please let me know if you have any lines/veils you would like added to this list for the specific session you'll be playing in. Our primary safety tool is the 'X' card or, as Sly Flourish's Mike Shea phrases it, "Let's pause for a moment." If something comes up that makes you uncomfortable, or if you have a question about how your or another player's character's actions are going to affect the whole group, or even if you (or the Keeper) just wants to check in to see how people are doing, just say "Let's pause for a moment". NOTE: this can also be done anonymously by messaging the Keeper privately, if you so desire.
