About the adventure

You know what they say—“When one door closes, another one opens.” Here at the Staircase, there’s an infinite number of them. And Nafas? He knows every single one. When the first doors opened along the staircase and multiversal winds blew through them they coalesced into Nafas; a noble genie bound to the staircase itself but in possession of the limitless power to shape reality through wishes. He is the breath of the multiverse and a care-taker of sorts. He can hear every wish that slips through one of the infinite doors but can’t do anything about it. And that’s where you come in. He asks those who wander onto the staircase for assistance with answering the calls for help he hears come from all corners of existence. However you come to arrive here and where you have come from doesn’t matter. Nafas needs you. He has sent adventurers to the ends of eternity and back to answer wishes and rewards those who aid him with wishes of their own. But a darkness creeps along the staircase. Doors fall to shadow and no longer function as a link between worlds. Something is happening that just may threaten the whole of the staircase and every world beyond. This is a campaign that’s a wild ride thematically. Adventures differ greatly in tone, and although I’ve added my own overarching plot, this campaign is more episodic than anything. I’ve found that this keeps players excited throughout months of play. For those who’ve lost track of sessions and plot information because of the weeks between, you’ll understand — and this is probably the campaign for you. This is exploration and adventure across the multiverse. You can be from Toril, Oerth, Krynn- it doesn’t matter. Play what you want and enjoy the ride.

About me

I’ve been DMing for 20 years now. I’m good at weaving in character backstories and making even published adventures feel personal. I try to promote comfort at the table but keep it professional at the same time. I allow players to play how they want and encourage them to meander through the plot, seek out the side quests and have some player to player RP moments. I stay engaged with the players throughout the campaign asking what they liked or what they would like to see next and try to make sure everyone gets the experience they signed up for. I’ve been doing this long enough to know what I’m doing. At the same time I never let that get in the way of trying to improve or allow it to give me a know-it-all-mentality. For those who care: I don’t use AI in anyway at all in the creative process behind my games. I don’t use it for anything outside of this either. Everything in my games is 100 percent from my brain or shamelessly stolen from existing tropes.

Character creation

Creating your character

We’ll be using the 2014 D&D rules for character creation — that means classes and backgrounds from the Player’s Handbook, Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, Xanathar’s Guide to Everything, and other official 2014-era supplements. Species from Monsters of the Multiverse are allowed. No 2024 classes, backgrounds, or spells. You can choose subclasses and species from any official D&D material published prior to 2024. Third-party content needs my approval first. I have a lot of third-party material in my library, which you’ll have access to — but check with me before picking anything to make sure it fits the theme of the game. Use point buy or standard array for your ability scores. No evil-aligned characters. Backstories should be at least a paragraph, no longer than a page. I read every one and do my best to weave pieces of your story into the campaign. We’ll finalize characters between Session 0 and Session 1 after we go over expectations.

The current party

We have a human warlock, an earth genasi barbarian, a plasmoid monk and an air genasi rogue. Everyone is level 7 and currently on the fourth adventure in the series. This current adventure takes place in Faerun in a region called Raurin.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You’ll need a mic, a webcam, access to D&D Beyond for character sheets and maps, and a Discord account. We’ll be playing over video chat on my Discord server, so make sure your setup is ready. I know some of us are camera shy and I can be as well but the webcam is necessary. Social interaction just flows better when we can all see eachother. Everyone has an easier time knowing when to chime in and it gives everyone the chance to read the room.

What DM Kayden brings to the table

I’m solid with voices and always curate music to match the vibe of each session. When I can, I create my own maps through dungeondraft and inkarnate. I have a pretty extensive library on Dndbeyond which you will have access to but it’s growing. If there is a book you want for character creation, just let me know and I’ll purchase it. In game, I like to keep things flowing.

Safety

How DM Kayden creates a safe table

I take player safety seriously, and I set clear boundaries to keep the game fun and respectful for everyone. In session zero, we’ll go over expectations and lines together. But here’s what I don’t allow, full stop: torture, rape, child abuse, sexually explicit content, or anything that creates discomfort for the sake of shock. Players control their own characters—not anyone else’s. I don’t permit hitting on other players, cheating, PvP, or stealing from party members. “Murder hobo” behavior isn’t a fit for my tables. If there’s anything that specifically triggers you, just let me know before the session and I’ll make sure it’s excluded — or I’ll let the group know that topic is off-limits for this adventure. During play, if anything comes up that makes you uncomfortable, feel free to step away and send me a message. I’ll pause and address it right away. My goal is to make sure everyone feels comfortable and safe at the table. After the session, we’ll do a quick debrief using Stars and Wishes — a chance to share what you enjoyed and anything you’d like to see handled differently in the future.
