About the adventure

Your a freshman at Higginsville Highschool, but it doesnt matter which cliche your a part of. Because willow county kentucky is a magnet for the spooky. Things have been strange ever since freshman year started for you. Lycanthropes, demons, ghosts & the fae have been a near daily occurrence in your life. Oh and by the way, your apparently a wizard now too on top of it all. Between the horrors lurking in the depths of the mountains, & the god awful book reports your teachers are making you do, you may not stay sane. Ancient creatures rise in the dark, stuffy old wizards lecture you about your use of magic, & you still need to find a date to winter formal before your the laughingstock of the whole school. Being a teenager is hard enough. Being a mage in training while also being a teenager is gonna get messy.

About me

I'm an LBGTQ+ game master with over 15 years of running role playing games. I specialize in the horror genre, like chronicles of darkness, but also run lore centered D&D & super hero games. If you enjoy over the top action which has you spitting in the face of death, then you will enjoy my storytelling style. I like to compare the types of games I enjoy running to buffy the vampire slayer or supernatural. My favorite games to run are Chronicles of Darkness, Sword Chronicle, & Forgotten Realms 3.75(pathfinder 1e using the 3.5 setting) I am a full time game master as well, so even if I dont have a game listed you are interested in, I am free & open outside of those times for custom game requests.

I have played a lot of games with Dean over the last several years. Primarily Chronicles of Darkness (Vampire, Changeling, Werewolf, Mage), but other games list Star Trek and Pathfinder as well. I enjoy his games and his style with his NPCs and plotlines. He is always supportive of new players as we all have to start somewhere after all. I highly recommend as a GM.

I’ve played with Dean for half a year now, and I’ve been amazed by the consistent dedication he puts into making sure every session is the absolute best he can be. Sessions are carefully crafted to allow for a collaborative story to be told by all the players in a game, and there’s always an open line of communication to discuss a character’s story or abilities so that everyone at the table is having fun with what they’re playing. There are always surprises around the corner with his games and even minor details can turn into entire plot arcs that the party didn’t necessarily expect. His worlds have unique and realistic characters that really allow for the players to delve into them and immerse themselves in the experience. All in all, I’ve deeply enjoyed my time playing with Dean and would strongly recommend his games for anyone who wants a fun and immersive experience.

Dean is a wonderful GM with games that are full of intense adventure, detailed settings, and involved roleplay. He puts a lot of care and effort into his games, and it really shines through. I've played in several of his games from start to finish over a few years. If there's one thing I can say about them, it's that between player goals and his reactive settings, there's always an answer to "So, what's the group doing today?" He has a talent for taking ideas and running with them, seamlessly incorporating them into the game as if it had been the plan all along. In-character decisions have rewards and consequences, making it feel like you're actively a part of the story that's being told. His ability to add to and build off of plot points means that campaigns can continue for a nice length of time. Character arcs can form and be resolved, the spotlight shifts to everyone in the group, and it all feels very cathartic. I have cried real tears over game events because of how well he incorporates different emotions into his scenes. I also like to judge people by the people they hang out with, and Dean's games are a great place to make lasting friends. Even though I can't stay up for them, there's usually people still hanging out after games and lots of chatter in the text chat through the week. Games are filled with laughter and other emotional reactions from players as things are revealed. I hear stories about his other games from people when we're talking. He fosters a really good community with his player base. TLDR, Dean's a great guy with amazing games. If you like a nice mix of action, adventure, and emotional roleplay, this is the GM for you.

Dean has a strong grasp of tone and tone switching, being easily able to move between comedy, danger, and mystery. This use of tone allows him to spin interesting settings with deep lore and chains of intrigue within the context of whatever game he is running. This creates a great space to roleplay in and I recommend playing with him if interested.

Dean's games are incredibly organized and he goes above and beyond in setting the mood and tone of the game and in fact he's games are the highlight of my week, he's setting is very fleshed out and npcs are very organic and fun to interact with and definitely leave strong impression on the players, and the plots have just been a blast.

Playing in Dean's one shot was a blast! Dean was friendly and knowledgeable about the system, and told a really fun story. His pre-generated characters for the one-shot were top notch! I would happily play another game with Dean at the helm.

Character creation
Creating your character

Character generation will occur during a zero session with everyone present. This is as much to make sure we all mesh as a group of people as it is to make the characters, backgrounds & get everyones equipment setup. We will also discuss lines & veils for the game(please Private message me ahead of time if your uncomfortable with expressing these in a live chat). For those that join later, a one on one onboarding session will be scheduled outside of the normal game time to make you a character. Afterwards communication & further background info will be conducted with everyone via a discord channel on the server I use. No character's will be approved prior to the zero session. This includes pre-generated characters, & all players will be required to meet the same character creation expectations of the table, which may vary from group to group. Concepts related to local/state government, police & active military will not be allowed. There will be an emphasis on everyday people for character concepts(musicians, waitress, factory worker, etc), over specialized ones(occultists, private eyes, ex-marines, etc).

The current party

New Players that join after the campaign has started will be required to attend an onboarding session outside of the normal schedule to create a character appropriate for the group & setting. This onboarding session is charged. House Rules - New Characters will be built as mortals along the same XP curve as previous characters expierenced, before applying the newly awakened template & then buying up to the current power level of the cabal. - Freshman will start out at ages 14-15 on average, unless your a problem child who got held back for failing a grade, which would put you at 15-16 - Age to get your drivers permit is 16, but in the 1980s was often taught in schools as Driver's Ed classes. So player characters will not start off with a vehicle or drivers license. - Willow County is very poor, so the resources merit is capped at 2.

What to expect
Preparing for the session

A discord account with quality microphone that allows for clear communication without undue background noise & a stable internet connection. Those who are operating on mobile hot spots will not be fast enough to stay connected with foundry. A PC that can meet the requirements to run Foundry Virtual Tabletop. Netbooks & chrome books I have found in the past do not meet meet these requirements. Familiarity with the Mage the Awakening 2nd Edition rules is good but not required.

What Dean brings to the table

I will be supplying the Foundry VTT for use with our game, with all the basic rules of Chronicles of Darkness input into it on top of additional content I've input over time(hurt locker, armory, dark eras, etc). Full custom graphics & NPC interfaces I've programed for it specifically.

Safety
How Dean creates a safe table

This campaign will be focused on high school freshman in rural Willow County Kentucky, who are just near completing their magical training as mages. We have played through several story arcs with the kids as mortals, & have played through the awakening process as described in the signs of sorcery supplement book. The teen punks are nearing the end of their Newly Awakened period & will soon obtain full Mage Template status. A large part of the campaign will be focused on the kids learning how to use their magic, & learning about mage society as a whole... while still going to high school. OPEN DISCLAIMER: This mage game is heavily focused on narrative elements, & role play. As such while the spellcasting is still very much a part of the game, it does take a backseat to the story, so this campaign may not be a good fit for heavily technical focused players. Most sessions will be a mixture of investigation, role playing & combat depending on where the current plot line is going. Combat is also very dangerous & realistic, so characters becoming injured or close to death isnt impossible. Sexual content will not be allowed in this game as you will be depicting underage characters. This is a hard line that will not be tolerated, though romance & dating is still very possible. Lines & veils will also be honored & set up ahead of the chronicle via discord chat, so that I can fine tune any plot content to avoid things players may not want to face in game. Additionally, I am always online via my discord both during & outside of game should you need to bring something to my attention, whether thats a veil thats being approached too close or something makes you uncomfortable.
