About me

I'm new to playing TTRPGs, but I've loved anything D&D-related since I was a little kid. In the '80s, you would've found me watching the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon on Saturday mornings, reading the Dragonlance novels, and playing Wizardry on an Apple II. I decided it was finally time to check "play D&D" off my bucket list. Through the magic of StartPlaying, I dove in! I've been focusing on Daggerheart and D&D, but I also enjoy trying different systems and settings... bring on the one-shots! (Update: Not a total newbie anymore, more of an "advanced beginner.")

I played in Bruno’s “Raiders of Kobold Isle” one-shot and had a great time! If you’re looking for an Indiana Jones-inspired D&D romp, you’ve come to the right place. I usually prefer to create my own characters, even in one-shots where pre-generated ones are offered. In this one-shot, however, choosing one of Bruno’s characters is part of the fun! Each character comes with a detailed backstory and secrets, plus equipment and spells optimized for the adventure (you are allowed to customize these somewhat if you’d like). The backstories and connections made this feel much more cohesive and like the beginning of an actual campaign than a typical one-shot. Besides the carefully constructed story, there was a nice mix of puzzles, exploration, and challenging combat. “Dragons? Why’d it have to be dragons!?”

Casey’s was the very first campaign I joined as a brand-new TTRPG player. We are playing the Daggerheart system, but using the Dolmenwood setting. Our group of players is a mix of experience levels, but everyone is new to the system and setting. Casey is very open to player feedback and questions, and it truly feels like we are collaborating and learning together. If you want to understand Casey’s GM-style take a close look at the section “How Casey Runs Games” on their SPG profile. Having now played 6 sessions with them, I think it is spot-on. Casey is also very flexible when players have had to miss sessions due to work or illness, and will not proceed with the campaign if they feel it is necessary for the full party to be there. I’m looking forward to continuing my adventures in Dolmenwood with Casey!

My regular campaign was canceled at the last minute, and I stumbled across Nikki’s charity game one-shot when I was looking for something to fill the time. I’d never heard of Perils & Princesses before, but decided to give it a whirl. Nikki offered premade characters since it was a one-shot, but I had fun creating my own Kitchen Magic princess: Sweet Niblets of the Butterlands. I’d never played with Nikki before, but found her very cheerful and friendly. She did a great job of setting the scene for our funny little adventure of helping to break a candy curse that had befallen the town and surrounding flora and fauna. We were supposed to have 4 players, but one couldn’t make it, and another dropped out midway during the break (due to sleepiness). Nikki rolled with it, and the other remaining player and I solved the sticky situation. A sweet time, and I’d definitely play with Nikki again!

I joined Susann’s “Learn to Play Nimble” one-shot and had a great time! Susann is organized, welcoming, and clearly knows her stuff. She is also patient and approachable. Susann answers questions in a clear, calm manner, which makes learning a new system less intimidating. I also thought she was adept at offering suggestions and highlighting abilities, since we were all new to our premade Nimble characters and the system. It was an enjoyable session and tiny adventure! I’d happily sign up for a longer campaign with Susann.
