About Chris Poon

We are The Knowledge Exchange, a 501c (3) NPO founded in Fredericksburg, Virginia in 2020. We're a diverse team of passionate professionals who realize that quality education is oftentimes unattainable for the masses. We exist to deliver holistic, evidence-based educational services that empower individuals & promote lifelong learning, fostering an inclusive global community. We are joining the virtual play space amongst like-minded individuals, with the goal to develop our global community, so that we may pursue our mission of making resources accessible to all that wish to continue lifelong learning. My name is Chris Poon and I'm the Director of Enrichment Programming at TKE. I've been a D&D player since 3.5e 18 years ago, a DM for over 12 years, and a tabletop game fan all my life. As of early 2022 I've been DMing several groups for TKE. We foster a community of players that primarily have disabilities or are neurodivergent, all while educating them in social-emotional learning (SEL) or behavioral skill instruction through the usage of D&D as a communal storytelling device. We teach our kids about real life issues through fantasy roleplay and story-crafting. Our kids & their parents tell us it's therapeutic, it's life-changing, and they don't know where they'd be without us. Please consider our using our services so we can help more burgeoning storytellers and further expand our global community support!

I got started GMing...

Shortly after my first D&D 3.5e campaign ended, my group was in need of a DM since ours moved on, and I haven't stopped DMing ever since!

The three words my players would use to describe me are...

P1: Diabolical, Verbose, Charismatic P2: Intentional, Challenging, Fair

When I'm not running games I'm...

Running around with my two Australian Shepherds, Baymax & Nova on grand adventures to wear them out! When my wonderful wife gets home, we love to watch anime together & hang out with the pups. Quality gametime helps cleanse the palette, as well as dedicated game nights with friends :D

How Chris Poon runs games

I'm the "Nick Fury" type of GM who enjoys a healthy balance of RAW/RAI + RoC, crafting larger-than-life grand scenarios that will at first seem daunting, but leaves players feeling they've accomplished something epic or perhaps just narrowly survived! As a GM, I employ emotionally charged roleplay while implementing character voices, sound effects, and imagery paired with sense descriptors to craft an engaging experience. I enjoy using background/ambient music to immerse players in their gameplay, routinely incorporating character backstories into character development, leaving the table itching for their next session. I'm the type of GM that will leave clues along the way during our campaigns in the hopes that you're paying enough attention to be rewarded for your efforts. Seeing my players have their "AHA!" moments are worth it all, as they uncover the carefully & intentionally crafted story beats that enrich their gameplay. Ultimately, it's the dice that tell the story and I'm simply the vessel for expressing the dice's will. Want to build a story with us? Let's roll & play!

I once ran a session...

of 10 players with 2 DMs; 2 long 10 hour sessions split over a weekend for a finale of a 3+ year long campaign for two groups that were running the campaign in sync with each other. We had an absolute blast!!

My favorite trope is...

The one where the party wins in the end. Plot armor be damned, the whole point is for a happy ending, whatever that actually means...

Chris Poon's ideal table

Featured Prompts

I am for a vibe that's...

Engaging, intense but with the right amount of levity to break the tension when needed. The goal is to create an experience that's cinematic, with an emphasis on emotional learning and social skill development.

My perfect party mix is

A level-headed strategist, an excellent note taker, an enthusiastic role-player, the charismatic face of the group, a moral compass, and lastly the comedic relief.

My table is not the place for...

Main Character Syndrome, metagaming, cheating, Mary Sues/Gary Stus, a lack of empathy.
