About John Rummage | SpacelightIsWarm
Storyteller. Unrepentant cat staff. I've been playing and running games for over 20 years, mostly Scion, Werewolf: the Apocalypse, and D&D 3 and 5e, but I have a sizable library of read and ready systems, and I'm always willing to add new tools to the box.

I got started GMing...
Because I was the one who'd done the reading. I started devouring game systems in high school, and since I'd already gone that far, my friends thought I should run. Eventually I got good at it.
The three words my players would use to describe me are...
Funny Adaptable Unflappable
When I'm not running games I'm...
Playing. I'm in some games on the other side of the table. Outside of this hobby I'm into video and board games, and trying to keep a pair of cats entertained. I sell my days to an IT support company.
How John Rummage | SpacelightIsWarm runs games
I'm interested in a good story. In particular, I want to craft a tale about your character, someone you're invested in and enjoy portraying. I come to the hobby with a background in theatre and education. Theatre, particularly improv training, lets me adapt to unexpected choices and allow for a level of player agency you don't see at every table, and my time in education has given me a head start on helping novice players understand new systems.

I prep by
crafting a scenario. I know what will happen if the players do nothing, and I adjust by what they choose to do.
My games focus on...
Telling a good story and playing a game. That last part is important. It's a game. It's supposed to be fun for everyone involved.
Rules are...
Guidelines. Keep to them as much as makes sense, but don't let them get in the way of a good story.
John Rummage | SpacelightIsWarm's ideal table
The best players for my table are people interested in collaborative storytelling. Able to take the spotlight when it's their turn and able to cede it when it isn't. I don't insist on staying in character all the time, there's always a certain amount of messing around in these games, I do like to reward good acting and brave choices. It's meant to be mostly relaxed and fun, even if I sometimes fill the space with a dread manifestation of human foibles.

I love it when a player
has a good time. Whether they get to try out some spell or trick they've been looking forward to, play out a stratagem they can't believe worked, got to reveal an aspect of their character they've been holding tight since session zero. I want this to be fun.
I think min/maxing...
is a potential red flag. Not a huge one, but a possible sign this person is here to fulfill a power fantasy regardless of what it does to everyone else's evening. It could, however, just mean that an optimized sheet is how they enjoy the game. I'm willing to see how it goes.
My table is not the place for...
trying out some meme from reddit. I've heard them. They're tired. I'm not interested in sentient toast or Sir Bearington, and peasants can only pass objects at ordinary peasant speed. Don't waste the whole group's time like that unless we all clearly state that's what we're here for, please.
