About Rey

Hello! My name is Rey and I'm hoping you'll join me on my journey to becoming a professional GM! I've been playing tabletop games regularly for the past 20 years when I first started going to what was my favorite local gaming store in my hometown at the time where I got my first true taste of Dungeons & Dragons. I've since spread my wings from the starting nest of D&D and have a great love of exploring new indie games or slightly less mainstream games. I've grown to love many genres beyond the classic fantasy and love when the story and the world gets weird and wacky. As my tastes in TTRPGs has expanded, so has the need for me to step up to the plate to introduce my new favorite games to people who may have not yet taken the step out of their comfort zones. I've run a few different Pathfinder (both 1st and 2nd edition) campaigns and I absolutely adore PF2e. I've also ran a few one-shots of games like LANCER, Beacon, and Battlegroup. I also hope someday to become confident enough to run Shadowrun 5e as I love its setting. So if any of this sounds interesting to you, I hope you'll join me on this journey.

I became a GM because

I enjoy exploring games that are off the beaten path. There's so many indie TTRPGs that don't get enough attention. But finding GMs that are running indie TTRPGs can be very difficult. So, in the immortal words of Thanos, "Fine, I'll do it myself."

My 3 systems I'd bring to a desert island would be

Shadowrun 4e/5e - If I'm going to be trapped on an island, I'm going to take the opportunity to master these complicated game. Pathfinder 2e - A system that is a perfect mix between roleplaying systems and combat systems. Lancer - For when I want a completely combat oriented war sim game.

How Rey runs games

My favorite type of games include strong mechanical and tactical elements. I'm a firm believer that combat is storytelling just as much acting with your character's voice or describing how you interact with the world. I like my games to be accurate to the rules to a pretty decent degree. That's not to say I oppose house rules, just that when I first explore a new game, I want to understand what the creators of game's intentions are. I also believe that rules are what makes a game a game. With all that being said, just because a lot of my focus will be on engaging my players in deep and engaging tactical combats, that doesn't mean I don't also love roleplaying. Players should feel free to act out their character to the degree that they are comfortable with. No player will be penalized if they choose to play a character with strong speaking skills that exceeds that player's capability to act or a character who's intellect exceeds their own.

My favorite trope is...

Mortals teaching the gods a thing or two about humility. I enjoy many a JRPG where it is quite common for mortals to rebel against gods directly.

Rey's ideal table

I enjoy being at a table that explores novelty. I have fun teaching players both the beginnings of role-playing as well as introducing players to new games they may not have had the opportunity to explore previously. I'll constantly be exploring new systems to create one-shots sessions for and I'll give people spaces to explore these games with like-minded players. Show me your favorite builds and I'll show you mine. We can bounce ideas off of each other and consider each other's suggestions. Even if I'm the Gamemaster, I'll happily express my opinion on your character's build and give you suggestions on how you might either improve it mechanically or how to express the ideas or flavors that fit your character.

I am for a vibe that's...

Comfortable and fun. Telling jokes (both in- and out-of-character) while engaging in the combat or roleplaying that's going without necessarily spoiling the scene is something I want to encourage. We're playing a game - it should feel fun and engaging even during its serious moments.

My table is not the place for...

Murder-Hobos and Joke Characters. I like laughing. I love comedy. I don't want to discourage players having fun. But I prefer it when player's treat the game as though their characters' actions will have consequences. So I ask that player's try to treat the game's world with some seriousness.
