I got started GMing...
Running one shots for close friends and family.
How Jerry Th runs games
I like games that are mostly light on rules so I have room to make my own rulings, but when push comes to shove I would rather let players have their turn in the spotlight and have fun then be held back by restrictive rules. I also love having cinematic moments that give the PCs opportunities to have crazy moments to interact with and shine in.

I deal with rules issues by...
Making a ruling in the moment and reviewing the actual rule later. If needed, we go with the book rulings in the future. If the actual rule is lame, we change it and set a standard moving forward.
I prep by
Setting a goal (often given to me by the players) and making the path to get there more dangerous and interesting then it would seem. What would be cool obstacles to face? How can I challenge PCs throughout the journey?
Rules are...
A fantastic rubric to base a game on. They shouldn't always be an end all be all, but they help guide the game and catch it as a fallback when other things fail.
Jerry Th's ideal table
I like to run games for players that can get immersed in the setting and like to interact with the world and what it has to offer. I like to run games where we can work together to add to the narrative and maybe even bash in a bad guys head in the process!

I think metagaming...
Should be avoided when possible. Its fine if you have seen stat blocks before, but I think it removes some of the fun when you already know all the details of a monster. I think its best to go in blind, though I am understanding if you are just a really experienced player that has seen it before.
I think min/maxing...
Is fine, to an extent. Min-maxing is fine within moderation. I think its cool to have a character that's really strong in one regard and have really accentuated flaws. I don't think its okay to play it that way just for power gaming.
