About Mickey
I'm Mickey, a game master/game designer with a love of collaboration and storytelling. I started GMing in 2018 and since then, I've run many different systems. I love exploring new ones to grow my skills as a GM. I tend to run rules-light games that have narrativist mechanics to tell bespoke stories. I love RPGs and can't wait to share them with you!

I got started GMing...
while I was working for an Outward Bound education center off the coast of Boston. My friends and I needed some activities to do when we weren't leading courses, so I decided to run a game for them on the dorm-room's kitchen table.
My 3 systems I'd bring to a desert island would be
Ironsworn because of its narrative mechanics and oracle tables, For The Queen because it doesn't require a table and builds really juicy character dynamics, and Agon because its a game about island-hopping heroes (maybe it'll give me some hope!).
My favorite books are
Life of Pi, The City of Ember, Into the Wild, Angels and Demons, My Side of the Mountain, Parable of the Sower, The Lightning Thief, and Station Eleven.
How Mickey runs games
Do you like action!? Emotionally resonant stories!? Fast-paced play!? Me too! Do you like waiting 15 minutes for your turn or calculating your situational modifiers!? Awesome! (but there are probably better GMs for you). I tend to run rules-light games that have narrativist mechanics and a defined arc of ~5-7 sessions. I make a point to collaborate with players when defining the world and describing scenes. I love acting out NPCs but don't demand that role-play looks any particular way. I value table-consensus rulings rather than running on purely GM arbitration. I like to play rules as intended, but make a quick ruling if the rules-search takes up our precious time and momentum. Communication tools like Pause, Rewind, and Fast-Forward are central at my tables and I set clear expectations from the get-go. If that's like your cup of tea- let's chat!

Rules are...
clues that show what the game cares about. They should at least be tried at first. After some testing, tables can tweak them to fit their needs.
When it comes to voices
I like to get into character. I try not to let the voices impact the tone of the game, but I like acting. I would never require it from my players, but I believe that the table won't feel comfortable to embody their characters fully if I'm not willing to lead by example.
Mickey's ideal table
My ideal table is proactive, generous and patient. My ideal players will listen to those around the table, feed off of their ideas and respect their boundaries. They are crew, not passengers.

I love it when a player
makes a sub-optimal choice because it progresses a narrative arc they want to see fulfilled.
I think min/maxing...
is tiresome, my tables are not for players who want to win.
