About EvilJimX

Hi, I’m Jim! Some folks know me by my Twitch handle, EvilJimX. I’ve been playing and running TTRPGs and LARPs for over 30 years. As a GM/DM, I have extensive experience with D&D (3rd, 3.5, and 5th editions), Vampire: The Masquerade (Revised and 5th ed.), D20 Modern, and multiple Star Wars TTRPGs. I’m also currently dipping my toes into Daggerheart to see where that adventure leads. As a player, if a game is put in front of me, I’ll play it. I’ve created more characters than I can count and been part of countless games — many that ended early (we’ve all been there), but it’s the long-term campaigns that hold my fondest and most impactful memories. As a writer, I love creating custom campaign settings for my stories. Building worlds allows me to be as invested in the narrative as my players are, and it gives us a unique shared space to explore. My approach to GMing is collaborative. The GM may be the story teller, but I want my players to feel they have a real hand in the creation of the world they inhabit. This comes partly from my background in the performing arts, and partly from the fact that it’s the kind of game I enjoy most as a player. I’m excited for the chance to tell unforgettable stories together — and maybe create a few memories you’ll be talking about for years to come.

I became a GM because

...I love to tell stories. I love to write stories. Most of all, I love to collaborate on stories with other creative people. This hobby has been extremely good to me; it has brought me friends, inspired my creativity, and has allowed me to be a part of an incredible community!

I got started GMing...

To impress a girl at camp. I know, sounds crazy, right? The first game I ever GM'd was the old West End Games Star Wars system for a group of counselors at camp. I was probably 13 or 14. It was a disaster. It was hilarious.

When I'm not running games I'm...

...really, really busy. Besides my 9 to 5, I am heavily involved in the local theatre scene, as an actor and director. I have also been involved in local LARPs for more than 25 years. In the evenings, you can often find me streaming Retro games on Twitch. Oh, and I am also a dad and a husband.

How EvilJimX runs games

I run highly collaborative, narrative-driven games where the story belongs to both the players and the world we create together. My style balances immersive storytelling, character-driven roleplay, and unforgettable experiences. While I believe the rules are an important framework for fairness and consistency, they should never stand in the way of creativity, memorable moments, or player agency. I strive to interpret the rules in ways that encourage bold choices and cinematic scenes, making every player feel empowered to shape the narrative while ensuring the game flows smoothly and fairly for everyone at the table. I aim to foster a table culture where players feel safe to take risks, collaborate, and invest in both their characters and each other. Whether navigating political intrigue, surviving harrowing combat, or unraveling a mystery, my goal is always to ensure everyone leaves the table with stories worth retelling.

If my games were Movies they'd be directed by...

I love this question! If my games were a movie, they’d be a strange collaboration between Rob Reiner, Guillermo del Toro, and Terry Gilliam; beautiful sets, heartfelt moments, odd detours, and characters you’ll hopefully remember long after the credits.

My games focus on...

My games are character-driven and collaborative, set in richly detailed worlds. I favor ROLEplay over ROLLplay, empowering players to take risks, make bold choices, and immerse themselves in the story while keeping combat and dice as tools, not the focus.

Rules are...

...mean to serve the game, not hinder it.

EvilJimX's ideal table

My table is all about collaboration. We’re here to build something together, and that means sharing the spotlight, lifting each other up, and leaning into the story as a group. Selfish characters? Sure, they can be interesting. Selfish players? Absolutely not. I welcome all experience levels — whether you’ve been rolling dice for decades or this is your first time, you’ll find a seat here. I love introducing new players to the hobby and making sure everyone feels safe to take creative risks. This is a space where you can invest in your character, try bold ideas, and know you’ll be supported. We “roll with it” — literally and figuratively. Sometimes you win the day, sometimes you end up face-first in a fiery ditch. Either way, we’ll have fun. All are welcome, and you can expect equal parts shenanigans and sincerity. I’m not afraid to be silly, and I encourage players to join in — but I also want you to feel comfortable being vulnerable, open, and honest when the story calls for it. The vibe? Cooperative, accepting, enthusiastic, and willing to make terrible decisions in service to a great story. If you like to laugh, take risks, and help create moments worth remembering, you’ll fit right in.

I am for a vibe that's...

I am for a vibe that’s collaborative, welcoming, and a little unpredictable. Equal parts laughter and drama, where bold choices are encouraged, failure is fun, and everyone’s working together to tell a story worth remembering.

I think metagaming...

I think metagaming happens, especially with seasoned players. The expectation is simple: use what your character knows, not what you know, and have fun discovering things in-game, even if you already know them out-of-game.

My table is not the place for...

Bigotry and toxic behavior? Obviously not. Same goes for gatekeeping, spotlight hogging, or rules lawyering to “win.” We’re here to tell great stories together, not compete — so bring respect, creativity, and a sense of humor.
