About Emma-Jane
I always had a rough idea of what D&D was, but wasn't properly introduced to it until I caught notice of some posts by someone I followed on Tumblr - they were watching Critical Role as it originally premiered on Geek & Sundry. I was hooked. When I met my partner (of now 10 years) he was also watching CR, and together we decided to look for a game to play in ourselves. That was back in early 2018, and it wasn't many sessions before I jumped into the DM seat myself to introduce more of our friends to the game. Jump to now, where I have ran a homebrew campaign for nearly 8 year, ran innumerable oneshots for friends both at the table and online, played in a 6-year ongoing Curse of Strahd game where I fell deep into my PC (and Ireena's skirts tehe), and many other short-term games with DMs with a variety of skill and style - I'm a firm believer that everyone has something new I could learn! D&D 5e has been my mainstay, but I am interested in other systems - it's just a matter of trying to find time to learn them all!

I ran my first game...
with an hour of prep and half a sheet of notes! I had only gotten the chance to play in a couple of games as a player before some friends found out and wanted to join in - but they wanted me to DM and show them the ropes! It was terrifying and I was an anxious wreck, but they had a blast!
I started running games because...
D&D turned out to be something I really enjoyed and could sink my teeth into for the long term. After running a homebrew campaign for over six years, continuously weaving the story as we went, I received such great feedback that it finally felt like I'd found my calling in life!
When I'm not running games I'm...
starting a plethora of hobbies and crafts that end up scattered around the house in various unfinished piles! I love doing things with my hands, be is mini painting, terrain crafting, knitting, cross stitching, weaving, papier mache, you name it! Buuuuut I also have the attention span of a cat!
How Emma-Jane runs games
I'm a big believer in storytelling first, rules second. If you can give me a cool usage of something, that doesn't directly step upon an existing rule/item/class feature, I'll likely let you do it! I like to go in depth in my RP, especially when a group is comfortable enough to do that. On the flipside, I can also be versatile enough to pull back to basics to keep a game moving if my player don't seem interested in that level of investment. I like my combats to be interesting, to have more options available than just crowd a single-target and roll attack roll damage. I do this by utilizing landscapes and buildings for cover, or to hide unexpected enemies or items that may provide advantages. I pre-plan "important" combats to include waves of fresh minions or unexpected interruptions. I like to include timers for players to achieve secondary goals to inflict debuffs on their targets. And sometimes I'll hype a combat up only for the targets to be incredibly weak or misinterpreted, just to keep my players on their toes! I like campaigns that focus on the player character's stories heavily, but these campaigns require a lot of investment, time and planning, so I reserve them for players I know will be invested as much as I am. Lately I have been running prewritten modules as a change of pace, and enjoy trying to personalise these on the smaller scale, without overshadowing the content of the module itself.
