About Chris

Hi! I'm Chris from the UK. I am an educator who loves TTRPGs and see them as a good way to develop all sorts of skills in young (and not so young) people. Problem solving, understanding probabilities, developing empathy, learning to improvise, overcoming social anxiety and all sorts of other abilities come into play in every game - and you get to learn and develop them while having fun and telling great stories together. I started off back in the day (early 90s) with games like Paranoia, Call of Cthulhu and Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, but since my kids have been old enough, Dungeons and Dragons has become my main jam. I've G and DMed many sessions both online and around a table and my main obsession is that every character has their own story to tell as well as the plot of whatever game we're playing, whether it's a one shot or an extended campaign. I love playing published material with all the shiny resources available (I use Roll20, DNDBeyond and Syrinscape a lot) but I'm also very happy homebrewing, worldbuilding and running original scenarios and campaigns.

Featured Prompts

I became a GM because

I love to see the brilliant, crazy and inventive ways the player characters navigate the scenario, and how the dice can make epic wins and epic fails.

My favorite books are

anything by Neal Stephenson, Ursula LeGuin or Naomi Novik.

When I'm not running games I'm...

teaching maths (often to neurodivergent students) or playing bass in my rock band.

How Chris runs games

My unique style is that I have no unique style. I am player-led and ideally like to get the players together before deciding on settings and modules to run, so that everyone feels included in the process and can get what they want. I love a good touch-and-go combat, but I'm happy to have a roleplay-heavy session where dice are barely touched. I love it when a party gels: the players know how best to conduct their characters and are comfortable to roleplay well. Then they overcome obstacles and create those great quotable moments, and become Heroes. I love to work the characters' back stories into the plot, have story beats that shine the spotlight on individuals for a time, and have those big personal reveals or achievements that really bring the characters to life.

Featured Prompts

My games focus on...

telling the characters' stories, having them emerge throughout the campaign and having implications for the plot.

Rules are...

not always able to cover every situation, and sometimes don't work well even if they do.

When it comes to voices

I love to do accents. My Spelljammer players will never forget Pierre the french Devil!

Chris's ideal table

My table is safe and inclusive, so players can feel safe to roleplay to their hearts' content. I love to have players who play their characters, rather than the game. I am always open to Rule of Cool requests - they are my favourite!

Featured Prompts

I love it when a player

does what their character would do, even if it is not in their (or the party's) best interest.

I think min/maxing...

has its place. If you're into that - be my guest. And if you aren't, just build your janky character and let's get playing. We'll all have fun together.

My perfect party mix is

tank, magic-user, buffer, skill monkey. Old school, I know, but if you've got the bases covered you're going to do well.
