Lancer

Originally created by Miguel Lopez, Tom Bloom

Ever wanted to build and pilot a giant robot into battle against other giant robots? Lancer is your game. In this tabletop roleplaying game of grid-based tactical combat and high drama, you'll construct a custom war machine from some of the coolest designs ever put to paper, engage in mechanized warfare, and forge a blood bond with your companions in the heat of the battlefield! Lancer is set 15,000 years from the present day, where a revolutionary interplanetary state, Union, struggles to win a better world for the whole of humanity. You’ll not see the project complete, but you’ll put your shoulder to the wheel, struggle, and advance. There are many pilots in the galaxy, but only one of you. Your character is a lancer, a mech ace renowned for their skill in their machine. Developed half a millennia prior to the current day of Lancer’s setting, mechanized chassis—mechs—have redefined how war is fought across the Orion Arm. Under your command, your mech is a weapon unparalleled, and with your mech and your comrades by your side, you’ll write your own story.

I'm new to Lancer but after just three sessions I'm in love with it. The character development can be divorced from your mech build style and setup. The battles are crunchy enough to be interesting without being overwhelming. As a player I think it's amazing. I'm already waiting for my copy of the physical corebook to try and run it myself in the near future.

An amazing detailed setting with evocative artwork, streamlined integration with foundry Vtt, a slew of player options for those who love to tinker with builds, a combat system that feels like a crunchy mech battle but with less rules than other similarly themed systems; and some great first party and third party modules your groups can play through! Lancer is a bit lacking though when it comes to handling situations outside of combat making it less of an "RP" game out of the box; and properly balancing encounters can take some getting used to with the novel way it handles NPCs. But even with those flaws I have had nothing but good experiences with this system, you just need to be aware of what you are getting into.

If you like mecha combat and big cool abilities then this game may be right for you. I found the character creation fun and very interesting with all the options. Me and my wife really had a great time making our characters. The combat is interesting and after you learn it I think there is a lot of potential for great battles. My only recommendation would be to find a good GM for the game because with out someone that knows what they are doing and is willing to teach you the rules patiently this game system is hard. Con takes time to learn and understand.

LANCER is a fantastic evolution of crunchy combat systems like D&D 4th Edition, Exalted, and Pathfinder/Starfinder. The setting is a kitchen sink assortment of far-future tropes, so you have a lot of room to find a place intended for whatever kinds of stories you want to tell. There is a lot of room for numerous builds to shine, but the math is tight enough that completely broken mechanics are few and far between. And there are numerous 1st- and 3rd-party supplement for new adventures and new settings. Highly recommended!

Amazing system. Powerful mechs tactical combat and can fulfill almost all you need for mech fun. Free rule for players. Very crunchy combat with very free RP side

A great system for those who want a tactical experience with a wide variety of Mechs inspired by Gundam, Armored Core, Evangelion and other media. I would classify this system as rules crunchy. There are a lot of details that need to be considered when running Mech fights and that is the main thing about the game. Running it in VTTs with some level of automation helps speed up the game The released modules seem to reinforce the focus on Mech combat for the game, as well as the fact that there is very little to your pilot sheet. The variety of mechs and types is certainly a draw to the system. You can emulate Mechs from very different media all in the same story

How to Play Lancer

Lancer is a gritty tactical combat game on the battlefield and a rules-light narrative game outside of it, so most of the rules focus on the giant robot fights! The core mechanic is rolling a d20, adding or subtracting accuracy or difficulty dice, which are d6s applied when circumstances or your background would help or hinder you, and trying to roll a 10 or better. Accuracy and difficulty dice cancel each other out, one-to-one. The game master might also decide that a roll is risky, meaning there are consequences even on a success if a character rolls less than 20, or heroic, meaning the character will only succeed on a roll of 20 or better. Player characters also have access to triggers, broad abilities that allow them to add bonuses to rolls where they apply.

In combat on each player's turn, they can move and either take a "full" action , like a barrage of weapons or stabilizing and repairing, or two "quick" actions, like fast attacks, grapples, and bursts of speed. They can also overcharge, taking an additional quick action at the cost of heat, a limited resource that tracks how close your mech is to overheating and potentially exploding. Mechs also have stress, which helps mitigate overheating, hit points, to mitigate structural damage, and structure, how much structural damage they can take. Every time you run out of hit points, they recharge, but your mech will take some structural damage and risks being destroyed.

Characters in Lancer can customize their mechs, which means each mech frame will have unique access to weapons and abilities that expand or alter their options in combat. They can also scan enemy mechs to learn their capabilities, as well as engage in hacking and electronic warfare in addition to standard combat. Outside of the mech, characters can repair and upgrade their frame between missions, as well as blow off steam in downtime and bond with their fellow pilots.

How to Create a Character in Lancer

To create a Lancer character, you'll need a concept for both your pilot and their mech frame. Fortunately, Lancer's extremely cool options are here to help. Start with a name and a cool callsign for your pilot, then pick a background to help fit your character and concept into the far-future universe of Lancer. Your pilot also has four skill triggers that represent their personal abilities outside of the mech. Skill triggers offer bonuses to your character when they would apply to a skill check. Then you'll choose three pilot talents and two mech skills, their skills inside a mech cockpit that will grant tactical bonuses or additional options in combat.

Next, you'll construct your first mech frame! What you have available depends on your License Level with each of the corporations that create mech frames, so you begin with fewer options that gradually expand as your pilot advances. Each frame comes with a certain size and a few traits to start you off, but you'll customize from there. The frame will have weapon mounts, which you can load up with weapons from an extensive list, as well as mounts for other systems for things like electronic warfare, mobility, or other options. Once your mounts are full of systems and weapons, your mech is finished, and ready for a pilot to hop in the cockpit in the heat of battle!
