Long ago, the world of Avatar was limited to D&D homebrews. Then, everything changed, when Avatar Legends: The Roleplaying Game was released. Only the Game Master, master of the Powered by the Apocalypse system, could run it. But when the players needed him most, he vanished.
So you want to explore the world of Avatar Legends: the RPG? Sling around in octopus form while you fight off the Fire Nation army? Drive a tank through Republic City while metal bending police chase you down? You’re all set to become the greatest bender of your era! There’s just one problem: you’ve got noone to play it with. What’s the best place to find an Avatar Legends group online?
Avatar Legends: the Rolepaying Game was released in 2022 by Magpie Games, breathing new life into the world of Avatar. This official game has all the hallmarks of a robust TTRPG: a play-to-find-out system of moves, trope-based playbooks that put you right into a narrative role, and an integrated system of combat that combines bending and non-bending.
Naturally this kind of narrative-dense, cinematic gameplay is going to require a skilled Game Master, well-versed in improvisation. Alongside that, you’ll need to find a group online willing to play along with the shenanigans that are sure to follow. So where should you look?
You might consider an online LFG forum like r/avatarlegends first. Unfortunately, most of these subreddits and niche forums are relatively inactive. They do have complimentary discords that can be more fruitful, with dedicated communities, and if you’re lucky, you might find the right group, in the right timezone, to make things work.
Another issue with finding a decent Avatar Legends group is that it’s a very episodic game, which often leads to unreliable scheduling as some players become less invested in ongoing plots. A dedicated Game Master may be able to thread the needle and make an engaging series to string together a campaign. But where can you find one like that?
Your best bet may be joining a game run by a professional, like here at StartPlaying! With a seasoned and well-reviewed pro, you’re guaranteed to get somebody who knows what they’re doing, and will be there week after week to make sure you’re able to grow with your Avatar Legends online group. Stick with them a while and who knows? Maybe you’ll even get a showdown with Firelord Sozin himself and change history.
If all else fails, it’s never too late to visit your local friendly game store and ask around. Just please don’t bloodbend the other players!
