Tales From the Loop: A Mini-Campaign
It's the weird 80s and you are all tweens to teens just trying to get by, solve mysteries, and all before the streetlights come on!
About the adventure
In 1954, the American government ordered the construction of the world’s largest particle accelerator. The facility was complete in 1969, located deep below the pastoral countryside of Boulder, Nevada. The local population called this marvel of technology The Loop. In this roleplaying game, you play teenagers in the mid to late Eighties, solving Mysteries connected to the Loop. Choose between character Types such as the Bookworm, the Troublemaker, the Popular Kid and the Weirdo. Everyday Life is full of nagging parents, never-ending homework and classmates bullying and being bullied. Explore the secrets of the Loop in two main game settings – one based on the Swedish Mälaren Islands, the other on Boulder City, Nevada (we are playing in Boulder!). The Mysteries let the characters encounter the strange machines and weird creatures that have come to haunt the countryside after the Loop was built. The kids get to escape their everyday problems and be part of something meaningful and magical – but also dangerous. I'll be running the adventures from the Core Rulebook ("Summer Break and Killer Birds," "Grown Up Attraction," "Creatures From the Cretaceous," "I, Wagner," and a 5th newer mystery called "The Mystery Landscape"), and later, the other adventure series for the setting (I own them all and have even written a few!).
Meet the Game Master
About me
Hello, fellow adventurers and dream-weavers! I'm The Daily Dungeon Master, also known as Chex on Discord. With over 27 years of dungeon mastering, I've journeyed through every edition from the nostalgic AD&D to the dynamic realms of 5th edition—and yes, even that notorious 4th edition! I've also run Call of Cthulhu, RuneQuest, and lots of the 3rd Edition adjacent games (d20 Modern, Future, Apocalypse, etc...). Why choose me as your DM? It's simple: dungeon mastering isn't just a hobby for me; it's a deep-seated passion. Here’s what you can expect when you join one of my tables: -Tailored Adventures: Your play style sets the tone. Love epic battles? Prepare for heart-pounding combat. Adore intricate mysteries? Puzzles and intrigue await. Crave deep character development? Watch your backstory become the backbone of our campaign. -Inclusive World-Building: I strive to create inclusive environments that welcome and celebrate diversity, both in characters and players new and veteran alike. Everyone has a place at my table. -Interactive Sessions: Expect sessions where your choices truly matter. I use dynamic storytelling techniques to make the world react to your decisions, creating a living story where everyone contributes to the narrative’s unfolding. -Community and Connection: I believe in building not just a campaign, but a community. Our adventures are spaces where friendships are forged in the fires of dragon's breath and the quiet moments between battles. Spotlight on a Recent Adventure: In my Sunday Selsuria campaign (an open-world homebrew campaign I wrote and designed myself, originally designed as a West Marches-style campaign but adapted for a single party to play!), a full two-thirds of the party was captured by hobgoblin slavers only for the wizard to escape with crafty use of his remaining spell slots (they were captured mid-long rest), linking up with the uncaptured party members, and performing a daring rescue of the party and others that had previously been captured. Afterwards, while escorting the whole group back to the town, they defeated an encampment of cultists along the way. The cultists worshipped some entity that was not within the known pantheon of deities, and is just known to them as "He Who Whispers in the Dark," an entity worshipped by strange and usually evil creatures throughout the area. Who is this entity? Feel free to join us and find out as we recently had a slot open up due to life events causing a change in schedule for a player (https://startplaying.games/adventure/cm6v1o087000m1ox4k304omf4). Join the Adventure: Are you ready to explore new worlds and test your mettle against formidable foes? I'm looking for heroes like you to bring our next story to life. Message me now to reserve your spot in my upcoming campaigns or to discuss your ideal adventure. Or, join me on Fridays and Thursdays for my “Learn to Play” games (RuneQuest and Call of Cthulhu)! Knows the Rules
Amazing DM. As a fairly new player of D&D, I experienced sufficient freedom, ample instruction, and proper patience throughout. I could freely Roleplay my character in accordance to their history and character within the session. Thank you for the experience. Would experience it 10/10 again if I could. Can't wait to participate in more games with you as the DM going forward in my D&D future.
Anthony is an exceptional DM who keeps the game flowing smoothly while still being fun and flexible. His sessions are welcoming to both new and experienced players alike, ensuring that everyone can find a seat at the table without feeling intimidated. I look forward to every session!
Character creation
Creating your character
Character creation, unless you pre-arrange it with me, will be done at Session 0. If possible, I would *prefer* to have character creation done prior, but I know that's not always possible, so I like to keep that option open. If we have time after character creation, I would ideally like to start the first mystery! If we don't get to it, that's fine.
As someone who grew up in the 80s and remember those days (as a child at least) fondly. Things seemed a lot less complicated. I love the 80s feel of "Stranger Things" and the whole vibe of "Gravity Falls" and this campaign is like if "Gravity Falls" was set in the 80s! This is a mini-campaign that is expected to last all of 5 adventures, which will last about 5-10 sessions. If there's enough interest, I might be willing to extend it out to a full-on longer campaign.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
Webcam is not needed, but a mic will be needed for Voice Chat. Again, we will be using Discord for Voice Chat and Roll20 for actual gameplay. I have a Pro Roll20 account, so a basic free account will all that will be needed for play. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to ask me!
What The Daily DM brings to the table
I will be using Discord for Voice Chat, and Roll20 for actual game play. I come equipped with full-color maps, art, and even ambient music and sounds when appropriate! I have a Pro account on Roll20, so there will be dynamic lighting as well. I do character voices, and like to describe the scenes using a combination of the "book" description and embellishing with my own take. I'm VERY big on the "Rule of Cool" and I like to say "Yes" whenever possible. When it's not a straight "yes" it becomes a "yes, but..." or a "yes, and...". I do own the rulebooks in both hard-copy as well as electronically (both on Roll20 and as a PDF) and will provide sections of the PDF if needed/wanted for things like character creation and such.

Safety
How The Daily DM creates a safe table
Although I put a considerable number of content warnings, the campaign should be light-hearted mystery solving. The mysteries have no real chance of any character death, and some of the violence involves animal attacks on people (birds in one, dinosaurs in another!). There is a mystery that involves animal experimentation, as well as a mystery that involves mind control (of adults; not the PCs). It should also be understood that the player characters (PCs) are all children between the ages of 11-15, so sexual content should not be an issue. As far as safety tools, I'm a huge proponent on my Open Door policy. If you don't like something or something feels wrong or makes you uncomfortable, speak up or PM me and I'll deal with it appropriately. I always check in with players after the session to make sure everyone is okay and that everyone had fun. Again, if there are issues, please just bring them to my attention, either privately or with the group. I usually add in a break at the mid-point of the session for health reasons (bathroom/food/beverage break) for a few minutes. If there are any hard lines the group *DOESN'T* want crossed (and by that, I mean anyone in the group can call these), address them in session 0. As for Session 0, we will do character creation and go over table rules and expectations, where we'll discuss safety plans further. For more on Session 0 see below.
