Legend in the Mist is a narrative gem, but new GMs should know it comes with a heavier prep load than expected. I say this as someone who loves Son of Oak’s work. City of Mist is my favorite game of all time, and I’ve run a lot of Otherscape too (their cyberpunk variant). Anything crafted by Son of Oak will always be at the top of my list, because their systems don’t just allow storytelling, they demand it. The mechanics are designed to fuel narrative at every turn, and that’s what I love most. Legend in the Mist carries that same spirit. It’s poetic, introspective, and filled with tools for character-first drama. The tag-based approach is elegant, and the Fellowship concept adds emotional weight to party dynamics. But I want to be real for any new GMs coming in: this system front-loads prep hard. Designing a Series with the Narrator rules took hours and that was for just one Adventure. A full Series is a serious undertaking. Once you're past that initial hill, it runs like a dream. But this isn’t a plug-and-play experience. If you're hoping for a light-prep fantasy game, this might not be it. If you’re willing to put in the work up front though, you’ll get a rich, roleplay-driven world in return.
Always have a great time playing with Andrew! He's always very knowledgeable about the mechanics of a game, but not only that he deeply cares about telling a great story! He cares about the world, the NPCs, the dangers, and especially your character. Highly recommend being a player at his table!
I first got into City of Mist after playing D&D 5e for a couple months and realizing I wanted something more narrative-driven. After some searching, I found this game and haven’t looked back! Son of Oak Studio clearly puts their heart into their games, and this one is the perfect blend of mystery, myth, and storytelling. What I love most is how the mechanics support the story instead of getting in the way. You don’t have to crunch numbers or roll for every little thing—the game flows like a TV show, where your character evolves naturally through choices and consequences. You can be anything you can imagine! Want to play a janitor imbued with Thor’s power? Done. How about an unkillable "Final Girl" straight out of a horror movie? Absolutely. The noir investigation style is spot-on, and the setting feels alive with secrets waiting to be uncovered. Whether I’m playing or running the game, I always have a blast introducing new players and creating characters. It’s definitely a staple on my gaming shelf, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. City of Mist is a must try and I'll always recommend it to any and all TTRPG buddies!
I first tried D&D 5e in March 2023, and it was my introduction to tabletop role-playing games. My initial experience was fantastic—it opened the door to an entirely new world of storytelling, creativity, and collaboration. For that, I’ll always be grateful to D&D 5e. It’s a system that has introduced countless people to the joy of TTRPGs, and its role in popularizing the hobby through media like Critical Role and Dimension 20 cannot be overstated. However, as I gained more experience in the TTRPG space and explored other systems, my preferences as a player and GM evolved. Over time, D&D 5e started to lose its appeal for me. I found the system overly focused on combat, with character progression often revolving around improving damage output or combat efficiency. For players like me, who value storytelling, problem-solving, and character development beyond mechanics, this became limiting. Additionally, the game’s mechanics and numerous rules felt overly complex, bogging down the flow of gameplay. That said, I recognize that 5e’s structure and focus are exactly what many players love about it. The system excels in high-action, heroic narratives and is perfect for those who enjoy strategic combat and traditional fantasy adventures. Its widespread popularity makes it a fantastic entry point into TTRPGs, and I’ll always appreciate its role in my journey as a player. While D&D 5e is no longer a system I choose to play or run, I respect it for what it is. It’s an important part of TTRPG history and has created countless memorable adventures for many players. Personally, I’d rate it a 3 out of 5—solid, but not a fit for my preferred style of play.
